The Vanishing’ Is Based On

Jan 9, 2025

For many people, R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series was their introduction to horror, either through the book series that he’s been writing and adding to since the early ’90s, or through the initial TV series that ran from 1995 to 1998. Stine’s skillful blend of dark and humorous elements made his work accessible, and the perfect introduction to the horror genre for kids who may have otherwise been too young for it. The popularity and incredible fanbase for both the original ’90s show and the book series, even after 30 years, is why it was no surprise when Disney decided to reboot the show.
The wild success of the first season of the new Goosebumps, drawing in fans of the original show as well as younger audiences who were introduced to a Goosebumps TV show for the first time, made a second season of the show likely. Now, less than a week from the premiere of the second season on January 10th, 2025, fans are wondering what to expect in this new set of episodes.

What Books Were Adapted in Season One?

The first season of Disney+’s Goosebumps series featured episodes based on a variety of Stine’s stories, including more than a few classics and fan favorites. This season introduced a new style for Goosebumps, focusing on a serialized anthology style that allowed viewers to experience new versions of these classic stories set around a small group of central characters. Because of this format, audiences were able to explore the same stories from a new perspective and enjoy getting to know the main set of characters as they reacted to and dealt with all the scary and insane stuff happening around them.
This season focused primarily on a group of high school students – Isaiah, Margot, James, Isabella, and Lucas – as well as their teacher, Mr. Bratt (played by Justin Long), and their parents. The story revolves around something terrible that happened to their parents in the ’90s, and how it continues to affect them and their kids all these years later. It is the parent’s actions that lead to the main set of characters being dragged into the frightening and impossible world of Goosebumps.
In the first season, audiences got to see new adaptations of some of Stine’s most beloved and memorable Goosebumps books, such as The Haunted Mask and Night of the Living Dummy. It also introduced audiences to some of his lesser known books in the series, like The Cuckoo Clock of Doom and Go Eat Worms. There was a range of monsters and unsettling situations, all plucked from his book series, which only got fans of the series all the more excited for what they might get to see in Season 2.

What Books Can Fans Expect to See in Season 2?

Goosebumps The Vanishing

The second season promises more adaptations of a range of books, from some of Stine’s most popular stories to the lesser known. Although it hasn’t yet been revealed how these stories will be adapted for the screen, the books the season will be based on have been confirmed. Fan favorites from the book series as well as the original TV show, such as Stay Out of the Basement, Welcome to Camp Nightmare, and The Girl Who Cried Monster will all be making appearances. There will also be episodes based on some of his more obscure titles, such as The Ghost Next Door, The Haunted Car, and Monster Blood.
Each of these stories have their own unique style and set of characters, so it will be interesting to see how the Disney+ show updates these stories to fit them into a serial anthology style like the first season. Audiences can most likely look forward to some creative monster designs, ghosts, living plants and maybe even aliens, if the books this season is based on are anything to go by.
For fans of the book series and the original TV show, it should be interesting to see how these stories are adapted in a new way and to watch how they all come together. There haven’t been any episode descriptions released yet, so all that fans have to go by are the books that are set to make an appearance in this second season and the cast list that has been released for this new season. Both the set of books that are being adapted and the mysterious nature of this season – with so little actually known about it – have led to a lot of discussion and anticipation among fans of the show.
