The year has barely started, but crime lovers are already in for a treat. On January 8, Season 6 of the true-crime documentary I Am a Killer was released on Netflix, and there is no doubt that the six episodes, each of them putting a different incarcerated person at the center, have an overwhelming potential to shock viewers. Even though the first season of this successful long-running docuseries was released back in 2018, the intrigue to dig into new crimes is still ever-present.
At this point, the true-crime series consists of a total of 44 episodes, and one crime is more devastating than the others. However, while there are cases in which the sentencing is understandable, there are others that cause viewers to be troubled. The justice system is important, but it also doesn’t seem fair to some. Episode 3 of I Am a Killer Season 6, “Defense of Another,” shows that not everything is always straightforward, and prejudice and racism can find their way into court.

On April 30, 2009, Walter Triplett, who got into trouble with the law in his younger years but managed to turn his life around and receive a degree as well as start his own business, celebrated his cousin’s birthday at a bar in Cleveland, Ohio, but within minutes, Triplett and his family got into a fight. While it’s not clear who the first aggressors were in the incident, one of Triplett’s family members got punched, and consequently, everyone involved got kicked out. The fight didn’t end there, though, because once Walter and his family were outside, a group of white men followed them, and the brawl continued on the streets.

While one got up and fled the scene, Michael Corrado unfortunately remained still as he hit the back of his head on the curb. Despite being transported to a hospital, Corrado eventually died from his serious injuries, and Walter was arrested. Why Are Viewers Troubled Over ‘I Am a Killer’ Season 6, Episode 3?

Many share the same opinion that Walter Triplett’s trial wasn’t fair, and there is a major reason that could potentially support that stance. Since there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Triplett with murder, he was instead charged with assault and involuntary manslaughter. During his first trial, the jury failed to reach a decision regarding the latter but found him guilty of assault, which led him to receive a maximum sentence of 18 years.
Appealing to this, Triplett was put on trial for a second time, but this time around, the jury found him guilty on both charges, and he received the new maximum of 20 years in prison. The most important aspect in both of these trials is that 11 out of 12 people on the jury were white in the first trial and all-white in the second. This Is the Zodiac Speaking is Netflix’s most infuriating documentary ever, but this episode of I Am a Killer will make your blood boil equally. Walter was portrayed as a cruel person, sometimes even looked upon as an animal, and was left with no chance of receiving a fair sentence.

Walter has already spent 15 years behind bars, and it seems as though his situation won’t change any time soon.
However, Triplett does make the point by saying that there is only one thing he would change and that is to stay home in the first place. It is evident that he wishes he had never been at that bar that night, but regardless of how terrible the outcome was, he says that he would always protect his sister, no matter what.
