Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy

expertly mumbles his way through this well-received western gangster flick – which is now streaming free. Hardy remains one of the most acclaimed actors in Hollywood thanks to roles in the likes of Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Venom, and has become well-known for transforming his vocals for each role. And 2012’s Lawless is no different. In fact, it might be one of his best.

Directed by John Hillcoat from a screenplay by singer-screenwriter Nick Cave, Lawless is based on Matt Bondurant’s historical novel The Wettest County in the World and boasts an all-star cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, and Guy Pearce alongside Hardy. Spin-off to One of Tom Hardy’s Best Movies Is Now Grappling With Surprising Streaming Issue

The spin-off to the Tom Hardy MMA drama is fighting to find a studio willing to back the project.

“In 1931, the Bondurant brothers of Franklin County, Va., run a multipurpose backwoods establishment that hides their true business, bootlegging. Middle brother Forrest (Tom Hardy) is the brain of the operation; older Howard (Jason Clarke) is the brawn, and younger Jack (Shia LaBeouf), the lookout. Though the local police have taken bribes and left the brothers alone, a violent war erupts when a sadistic lawman (Guy Pearce) from Chicago arrives and tries to shut down the Bondurants operation.”

‘Lawless’ Boasts One of the Quintessential Tom Hardy Performances

This story of bootlegging brothers fighting to survive during the Prohibition-era leans into western sensibilities to tell the gangster tale. Making it more of a neo-western. The movie was met with solid reviews from critics, landing a score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes alongside 74% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. “Grim, bloody, and utterly flawed, Lawless doesn’t quite achieve the epic status it strains for, but it’s too beautifully filmed and powerfully acted to dismiss,” the critics’ consensus reads.
Lawless features one of Hardy’s quintessential performances. Barreling around the dusty surroundings and threatening his adversaries with his shoulders hunched, Lawless makes great use of both the actor’s hardman persona and his mumbling drawl.
The actor continues to be a major draw for audiences, with the Oscar-nominee finally taking the lead in The Raid director Gareth Evans’ Netflix action thriller, Havoc. Written and directed by Evans, Hardy is joined in Havoc by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker and star of Justified and The Mandalorian, Timothy Olyphant. Making up the rest of the supporting cast are Justin Cornwell (The Umbrella Academy, Bel-Air), Jessie Mei Li (Last Night in Soho, Shadow and Bone), Yeo Yann Yann (American Born Chinese), Quelin Sepulveda (Good Omens), Luis Guzmán (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Sunny Pang (Headshot), and Michelle Waterson (Fright Night). Havoc is now available to stream on Netflix, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

“When a drug heist swerves lethally out of control, a jaded cop fights his way through a corrupt city’s criminal underworld to save a politician’s son.”

Havoc has already seen huge success on the streamer, reaching the #1 spot in the Netflix top 10 despite some mixed reviews.
