What We Do in the Shadows to End With Season 6

Dec 22, 2023

Summary

The comedy-horror series What We Do in the Shadows will end with its upcoming sixth season. The show, filmed as a mockumentary, follows the lives of four vampires living together in Staten Island and has been met with critical acclaim. The fifth season received high praise and the show currently holds an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, along with multiple award nominations.

The critically acclaimed, Emmy-nominated comedy-horror series What We Do in the Shadows will come to an end with its upcoming sixth, and now final, season. The sad news was first broken by Vulture, and it is sure to come as something akin to a stake in the heart or an ax in the neck for fans, who have enjoyed the antics of the vampire community since the series began back in 2019.

Filmed as a “mockumentary,” and based on the 2014 feature film of the same name from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows takes a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of four vampires who have “lived” together for hundreds of years in Staten Island.

The self-appointed leader of the group is Nandor the Relentless, a great warrior and conqueror from the Ottoman Empire. Then there’s the British vampire Laszlo, a bit of a rogue and a dandy and a fop, he might say. He’s a lover of mischief and a great soirée, but not as much as he loves seeing Nandor fail miserably in every attempt. And then there’s Nadja: the seductress, the temptress, the vampiric Bonnie to Laszlo’s Clyde. Also cohabiting in the vampire household is Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar; and Colin Robinson, an energy vampire and day-walker of sorts – he feasts on humans, but not on their blood.

Created by Jemaine Clement, the What We Do in the Shadows spinoff series first aired on FX in March 2019, and stars Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Relentless, Matt Berry as Leslie “Laszlo” Cravensworth, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja of Antipaxos, Harvey Guillén as Guillermo de la Cruz, Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson, and Kristen Schaal as The Guide.

What We Do in the Shadows Has Been Met With Critical Acclaim Throughout Its Run

The season five finale, which aired earlier this year, saw Guillermo, Nandor’s long-suffering familiar, getting closer with vampires Derek, the Baron, the Sire, as well as bringing back Haley Joel Osment as Topher, a familiar-turned-zombie, and Benedict Wong as the necromancer, Wallace.

Much like the rest of the series, the fifth season of What We Do in the Shadows was met with critical acclaim. Since the beginning, What We Do in the Shadows has received much praise for both its writing and performances, and currently stands at a hugely impressive 97% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

During its run, What We Do in the Shadows has also received several award nominations and wins, and has been nominated for 21 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2020 and 2022.

So, while it will come as sad news to many that What We Do in the Shadows is now due to end with its upcoming sixth season, we can no doubt expect the comedy to end on a high.

What We Do in the Shadows season six does not yet have a release date.
