What We Want to See in Season 2

Sep 18, 2023

Summary

My Adventures with Superman has been a surprise hit, praised for its return to the classic Man of Steel and lighthearted writing. The second season of the show will feature iconic villains Brainiac and General Zod, based on visual clues and dialogue. The revelation of Superman’s true identity as Clark Kent has shaken up the character dynamics, and the new season will explore how his relationship with Lois Lane is managed amid new threats.

Spoiler Warning: My Adventures with Superman

My Adventures with Superman has been a surprise hit for both cautious DC fans and general audiences alike. While some have derided the series’ return to the classic Man of Steel as something unoriginal, others have cited this exact shift in direction as something sorely needed after years of gritty Superman stories. We have a charismatic Superman, now played by Jack Quaid, which brings us back to the days of Christopher Reeve’s iconic performance of the character. We have a spunky pair of side characters in the form of a revitalized Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, an eclectic series of recognizable and obscure DC villains, and an overall sense of passion powered by the series’ lighthearted writing and stellar animation. It’s a terrific combination, to say the least.

With season two of My Adventures with Superman confirmed, we figured it’d be useful to condense what exactly a second season needs to accomplish. Though some plot threads have been clearly set up for a second season, others may not be as blatant. As for what this next batch of episodes will be about, we can recap some of the ideas introduced in the show’s first season to see how things will progress moving forward.

The ending of My Adventure with Superman’s first season teased the particularly dramatic arrival of more iconic villains after a failed invasion of Earth. Like other major villains that appeared in the series, they saw a significant redesign to accompany the series’ colorful style. You may not have even recognized them at first. However, the current consensus surrounding their identity is that they’ll be two of Superman’s most nefarious rivals: Brainiac and General Zod.

Admittedly, neither of the two are directly referred to by name. However, we can assume one of them is Brainiac due to the presence of a specific symbol on his helmet: three circles, organized in a triangle pattern. The symbol has been an iconic representation of his character across multiple incarnations, and given the character’s ties to Superman as one of his main villains, it’d be more surprising to not see him make an appearance. Likewise, we can assume Braniac’s counterpart is General Zod via a simple turn of phrase. As the two discuss the destruction of their plans via our heroic Kryptonian, one has this to say: “It does not matter. In the end, they will kneel.” Now, even if you’re not the biggest of fan of Superman, you likely know that General Zod has an infatuation with making people kneel before him.

Superman and Lois Lane

Though a big portion of My Adventures with Superman made Clark Kent’s secret identity a major conflict, they did eventually let the cat out of the bag. Lois Lane finally figured out the truth: Superman is actually Clark Kent. After seeing the truth with her own eyes shortly after throwing herself off of a rooftop, the character dynamics established throughout the first season have undergone a significant shakeup. But where do we go from here?

For one thing, Lois is officially dating Clark Kent under the watchful eye of her father, Sam Lane. As in, the very same Sam Lane who’s been collaborating with Amanda Wallace under his alias, “The General.” Though Clark’s family is more than happy to see the arrangement, Sam – being a member of Task Force X – is more than suspicious of Clark’s real identity. While he spared Superman’s life at Lois’ tearful request during the events of season one’s finale, we’ll have to wait and see how Superman and Lois’ relationship is managed amid a series of new threats.

What Else to Expect
Warner Bros. Television Distribution

Of course, season two of My Adventures with Superman will have much more to work with now that it’s no longer forced to exposit and establish its own continuity. As great as it was to see the Man of Steel’s origins revamped and revitalized in a new way, it’s time for the series to take this character into some new territory. Luckily, plenty of concepts have already been established throughout season one that can be expanded upon in season two.

Some have speculated that an assistant to Professor Ivo, named “Alex,” is actually this series’ interpretation of Lex Luthor. The two appear in the episode “Let’s Go to Ivo Tower, You Say,” with Ivo running a financially successful corporation, AmazoTech. Given Lex Luthor’s frequent associations with white-collar crime and vast wealth, it’d be appropriate. The end of the episode, wherein Alex vanishes with an entire room’s worth of high-tech gadgets after the defeat of Ivo, also lends this theory some credence.

The second season could also do more with the multiverse, which established some key concerns towards the latter half of season one. Aside from introducing the interesting “League of Lois Lanes,” a collection of Lois Lanes from dozens of separate universes, My Adventures with Superman has teased a terrifying possibility: What if Superman turns evil? Seeing as how the League of Lois Lanes formed to keep the multiverse in balance, Superman going rogue has already come true in other universes. We’re obviously not expecting something similar to the Injustice storyline here, but it’s still something that draws our interest.

According to Josephine Campbell, a writer and producer for My Adventures with Superman, season two was roughly developed around the same time as season one, meaning we’ll hopefully get to see how these teased concepts and ideas are fully explored in the future. Though details surrounding what’s to come are sparse, she was also able to confirm that season two will contain the same number of episodes, ten in total, and that it’ll be something to be truly excited for.

All episodes of My Adventures with Superman’s first season can now be streamed exclusively on Max.
