Where You’ve Seen the Cast Before

Mar 30, 2023

With the critically-acclaimed afro-surrealist dramedy Atlanta officially over, many fans of Donald Glover and his work were left wondering what his next project would be. For those unfamiliar with Glover and his work, the multi-talented star is a writer, actor, producer, director, stand-up comedian, and musical artist. His work ranges from 30 Rock, Community, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Lion King. Additionally, Glover has built a loyal musical fan base as the musician Childish Gambino, a project that dates back to 2008. Known for his work ethic, clever writing, and insightful and thought-provoking lyricism, Glover is a rare talent who only seems to improve the quality of his work with subsequent releases.

Co-created with Atlanta writer Janine Nabers, Glover’s most recent project, Swarm, is a horror-thriller project about the potential dangers one can incur obsessing over their favorite entertainers or celebrities. Dre, the show’s protagonist, is obsessed with a Beyoncé-inspired pop star, and her mental health declines because of this obsession. Swarm offers a fresh take on the crazed-fan thriller genre and, more importantly, provides some new or vaguely familiar faces in its cast.

Dominique Fishback

Prime Video

Having earned her B.A. in theater in 2013, actress Dominique Fishback has been active in Hollywood for the last decade. Known to fans for her versatility, Fishback has secured roles on the small screen in critically-acclaimed television shows such as David Simon’s The Deuce, Random Acts of Flyness, and The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Her work in film includes supporting roles in 2018’s The Hate You Give, Netflix’s Project Power, and the Oscar-winning film Judas and the Black Messiah.

Fishback continues to stun in Swarm with her beautifully deranged performance as the series’ lead, “brainwashed follower” Dre.

Chloe Bailey

Prime Video

One half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, fans of R&B might already be familiar with Chloe Bailey. With her younger sister Halle, the siblings have been in the entertainment business since they were children, initially performing covers of popular songs and uploading them onto their YouTube channel. Bailey made her acting debut in 2003’s The Fighting Temptations, a role in which she portrayed the child version of Beyoncé’s character. She followed up this performance with appearances in Meet the Browns, Beyoncé: Lemonade, Grown-ish, and Black-ish, just to name a few.

Moreover, it isn’t a stretch to say Bailey’s casting could have been motivated by her experience in the music business. In any case, Bailey’s supporting role as Dre’s sister Marissa indicates the R&B singer is going against the grain and trying out something drastically different from what her fans have no doubt come to expect.

Damson Idris

BET

Fans of FX’s crime-drama Snowfall are probably already familiar with British-Nigerian actor Damson Idris. Idris’ performance as Franklin Saint, the show’s protagonist, has been well-received by critics and audiences alike partly due to the intensity and vulnerability Idris brings to the role. With supporting roles in sci-fi horror-inspired shows The Twilight Zone (2019) and Black Mirror, Idris is no stranger to tackling acting roles set in strange and macabre atmospheres. Idris was confirmed for one episode, leading fans to speculate about his character’s possible death.

Leon

Walt Disney Pictures

Leon Robinson (or Just Leon) has been in the entertainment business for forty years. As a journeyman actor, Leon has appeared in films such as Band of the Hand, Colors, Cool Runnings, Above the Rim, and Get Rich or Die Tryin’, just to name a few. Known for his versatility, Leon has impressed critics and audiences worldwide with his ability to portray whacky characters in screwball comedies like Cool Runnings and to give more subtle performances as seen in dramas like Colors.

In addition to Leon’s acting career, fans may recognize Leon from his work as a musician in the group Leon and the Peoples. Just like Bailey’s casting in this show, Leon’s background in the music business leads us to believe his experiences in the industry might have something to do with his casting, given the nature of the show.

Kiersey Clemons

HBO Max

Kiersey Clemons caught moviegoers’ attention in Rick Famuyiwa’s 2015 coming-of-age film Dope as the spunky supporting character Diggy. Since her appearance in the film, Clemons has secured supporting and recurring roles in film and television, such as Scoob!, Antebellum, Transparent, New Girl, Bojack Horseman and in the DCEU as Iris West. Additionally, Clemons has appeared in music videos from artists Trey Songz, Lady Gaga, and DJ Snake. We think it is safe to say that fans of the actress are familiar with her extensive and varied resume of work, and are excited to see what she brings to this show.

Episodes of Swarm are now available on Prime Video.
