Will Ferrell Has Golf Comedy Series In The Works With Rian Johnson’s T-Street Productions

Apr 19, 2023

Will Ferrell is no stranger to sports comedies, with the likes of “Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby,” “Semi-Pro,” and “Blades Of Glory” already under his belt. Now he’ll tackle territory similar to “Happy Gilmore” and “Caddyshack.” Deadline reports that Ferrell will headline an upcoming golf comedy series about a pro golfer who becomes the controversial face of a new league competing with the PGA.

If that premise sounds similar to the short-lived LIV Golf start-up, well, bang on: it’s part of the satire in play for this series. But Ferrell’s latest TV venture isn’t just for golf enthusiasts. And why not? Here’s the ringer: Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum of Gloria Sanchez Productions team up with Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman‘s T-Street for the series. Yup, the studio behind the “Glass Onion” films and Peacock‘s “Poker Face” are part of this project, making it quite buzzworthy indeed.
T-Street’s President of TV Nena Rodrigue is also on board to produce, but unlike “Poker Face,” Johnson has no plans to write and direct the series. That may sound unfortunate, given the Peacock show’s critical acclaim, but look to Ferrell and Gloria Sanchez’s other recent TV work for inspiration here. Ferrell returned to TV in his first major role since his stint on “Saturday Night Live” years and years ago for Apple TV+‘s dark comedy “The Shrink Next Door.” And Gloria Sanchez was behind Netflix‘s “Dead To Me,” which ran for three seasons.
So which streamer will snag this Ferrell-led comedy series? No word on that yet. But since Ferrell hosts The Will Powered Golf Classic, a fundraising event for Cancer for College, it’s safe to say the actor-comedian will perform his golf-related own stunts on the show. Ferrell created the event two decades ago.
But what’s next for Ferrell onscreen? In November, he stars in “You’re Cordially Invited” with Reese Witherspoon on Prime Video. But before that, Ferrell is in Greta Gerwig‘s “Barbie,” in theaters this July; he also voices a foul-mouthed dog in “Strays,” out in June.
