Summary
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
opens in theaters on June 26, 2026.
The movie is based on the DC Comics miniseries of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, showcasing a unique take on Supergirl’s character and journey.
DC Studios’ Co-Chair and Co-CEO James Gunn describes
Woman of Tomorrow’s
Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, as a jaded and hardcore figure set for an epic sci-fi adventure.
Fans won’t have to wait long for Milly Alcock’s Girl of Steel to take flight on the Silver Screen, whether the rumor of her appearance in Superman turns out to be true or not. The second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe has officially received a release date, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theaters on the heels of Gunn’s Superman film, which begins its theatrical run on July 11, 2025. Yes, director Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl movie will represent the new DCU in the Summer of 2026 when it opens on June 26. Woman of Tomorrow will also receive the premium format treatment on IMAX screens.
Woman of Tomorrow is based on the eight-issue miniseries of the same name appearing in DC Comics which was written by Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Evely. This will mark the Girl of Steel’s first big-screen solo adventure since Helen Slater suited up as Kal-El’s Kryptonian cousin 40 years ago in director Jeannot Szwarc’s Supergirl (1984).
Check out the original source material’s synopsis from the comic books which the film is based on below (per DC):
“Kara Zor-El can no longer find any meaning or purpose in her life.
But all that changes when
an alien girl seeks her out to help her take revenge on the bad guys who destroyed her world.
Now a
Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.
It’s Supergirl like you’ve never seen her before in
a character-defining sci-fi/fantasy masterpiece!”
Legacy of Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow
James Gunn announced that Milly Alcock won the role of Supergirl back in January. And according to the Co-Chair and Co-CEO of DC Studios, Alcock was the “first” actress Gunn mentioned to his collaborator… the other Co-Chair and Co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran. Gunn posted via his Threads account:
“In case you missed this exciting news yesterday.
Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role,
well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics.
I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity
we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are.
Life is wild sometimes.”
During his official announcement of the DCU (Chapter 1 — Gods and Monsters) back in January of 2023, Gunn described director Craig Gillespie’s Woman of Tomorrow as “a big, science fiction, epic film,” and he also spoke of Kara Zor-El as “a much more jaded character” than her Kryptonian cousin, Superman. Gunn elaborated on Woman of Tomorrow (per Deadline):
“We see the difference between Superman,
who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant,
versus Supergirl,
who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton — and
watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways
for the first 14 years of her life. And then came to Earth when she was a young girl.
She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Supergirl first appears in the pages of Action Comics No. 252 (1959). The character found its way to The CW in 2007, portrayed first by Laura Vandervoort as a series regular during Season 7 of Smallville. Vandervoort reprised the role once in Season 8 and as a recurring guest star in Season 10.

Most recently, Melissa Benoist starred as the Girl of Steel in all six seasons of Supergirl. Kara Zor-El (Sasha Calle) was one of the high points in the Ezra Miller-led Flash movie, which also featured the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman. Calle portrayed an Elseworld’s version of Supergirl in the now defunct DCEU.
