Women Talking, Severance And The Bear Take WGA Awards

Apr 19, 2023

There were three different guild award ceremonies on Sunday, but the one that studio executives were paying the most attention to was the Writers Guild of America Awards. And, no, it wasn’t because they were looking for more guidance in which screenplay to vote for on their Oscar ballot. Both the DGA and WGA unions will see their contracts expire in the next few months and a work stoppage could have serious ramifications for Hollywood. While there was a lot of talk about solidarity and “change,” it was also a celebration of the craft of writing and that meant there were awards to hand out. And, in a potential Academy Award preview, Sarah Polley won the Adapted Screenplay for “Women Talking.”

Oh, and you guessed it, The Daniels took Original Screenplay for this year’s award-season monster, “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” It should be noted, however, as only union members are only eligible for these honors, three of this year’s Oscar nominees “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Triangle of Sadness” did not make the WGA cut. Additionally, “Moonage Daydream,” snubbed by The Academy, took the Documentary Feature from the WGA.
On the television side, “Severance” took both the Drama Series and New Series awards. “The Bear” took Comedy Series while “Hacks” and “Better Call Saul” won individual episodic honors. In a surprise, “Inside Amy Schumer” took the Comedy/Variety Sketch Series award over evergreen favorite “Saturday Night Live.” And while it will likely be submitted as a Drama Series this Emmy season, “The White Lotus” took the Limited Series honor for its second season at the WGAs.
A complete list of all this year’s WGA Award nominees winners and nominees is as follows:
