The first real insights into the Oscar nominations dropped early this morning across the pond. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts revealed the 2025 BAFTA longlists and it clarified some major contenders and indicated some are in serious trouble. Leading all films was Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” with 15 mentions. Edward Berger’s “Conclave” was right behind it with 14.

Demonstrating substantial popularity were “A Complete Unknown,” “The Substance,” “Wicked,” and “The Brutalist” with 11 mentions each. “Dune: Part Two” earned 10 a piece while “Anora” and “Gladiator II” landed 9. “Kneecap” and “Bitz” took seven respectively. “Civil War,” “The Apprentice,” and “Lee” earned six each. “Nosferatu” and “The Outrun” found five mentions as well.
Films made in the United Kingdom traditionally end up performing better than they might when it comes to Academy Awards nominations. Hence the nice run for “Blitz,” “Kneecap,” “The Outrun,” and “Lee.” Next to the American guilds, BAFTA has the most membership overlap of any voting group with The Academy. Their choices do not always line up, but their shortlist historically indicate what films will do well when it comes to Oscar nominations and what won’t. Films that have to be concerned about their overall performance include three potential Oscar nominees for Best Picture: “Sing Sing,” “Nickel Boys,” “A Real Pain,” and “Challengers.”
Oh, and “Maria,” “The Piano Lesson,” and “The Room Next Door” which were completely snubbed.

BEST FILM
