‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off ‘Marshals’ Premieres With a Tragic Fate for One Fan-Favorite Character

Mar 5, 2026

Editor’s note: The below recap contains spoilers for Marshals Episode 1. It’s been over a year since Taylor Sheridan concluded his Paramount Network drama Yellowstone, but that doesn’t mean that we’re quite done with the Dutton family just yet. Off the heels of the original series rides Marshals, the new CBS drama that follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) as he dives into the next phase of his complicated and tortured life as a Montana cowboy-turned-lawman. With the series premiere, “Piya Wiconi,” series creator Spencer Hudnut (who previously ran SEAL Team) takes the Dutton saga in a bold new direction.

‘Marshals’ Series Premiere Picks Up with Kayce Dutton 15 Months After ‘Yellowstone’ Ends

Over a year after the Yellowstone series finale, “Life Is a Promise,” Kayce Dutton is a changed man. Having lost his father (Kevin Costner’s John Dutton), brothers, and unborn son in the original series, he has now lost his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), to a sudden battle with cancer. It’s just Kayce and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), now, residing on the Yellowstone East Camp after selling the rest of the Dutton Ranch to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation. It’s with that in mind that “Piya Wiconi” offers Kayce a new path. After an opening dream/flashback to his time in combat as a Navy SEAL, Kayce wakes up alone in his home. As he and Tate live their life on the open range, the Dutton heir spots a coyote in the neighboring pasture. Although he considers putting the dog down, he puts his rifle away instead. After their morning chores, Kayce and Tate get into a brief scuffle over a protest on Broken Rock that the younger Dutton aims to attend. “Running this ranch is our fight,” Kayce tells him, sounding more and more like his father by the day.

Luke Grimes leads the charge in this Dutton-verse sequel that is full of network potential.

But instead of leaning into that Dutton state of mind, he chases after his son, hoping to make amends. It’s then that his old SEAL brother (the same one beside him in his dream) and current U.S. Marshal Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) arrives to check in. When the pair goes target shooting, Calvin suggests that Kayce join his team (an offer he’s clearly made before), noting how helpful he would be in finding some fugitives held up near the old Dutton Ranch. Although Kayce isn’t interested at first, the moment Calvin reveals that they’ve been preying on Rez women, the Dutton cowboy is in. Meanwhile, at the Painted Horse Casino on Broken Rock, tribal chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) is told that the U.S. Secretary of the Interior is on her way to the local mining location where she plans to speak. Unhappy with the building of the local mine, Rainwater and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) note that although it isn’t being constructed on Broken Rock, it runs along the river and will affect their water sources, likely increasing the cancer rates. “America’s policies have long dumped a steady flow of poisons on our people,” Rainwater adds. “Using a literal river indicates that they’re running lower on imagination than cruelty.” It isn’t long before Marshals dives right into the action. Meeting up with Calvin’s team, Kayce is introduced to Marshals Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), and Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), most of whom aren’t terribly enthusiastic about gunning for these fugitives — John King and Tyler White — on horseback. Heading out on the open trail, Belle and the others recap the events of Yellowstone for newcomers not carrying over from the previous Taylor Sheridan series (and it won’t be the last time either). Upon getting to the hunting cabin where the outlaws are held up, Kayce reminds Calvin that his “days of riding into fire are over.” But as the Marshals prepare for battle, Kayce has a change of heart. After seeing one of the men flee on horseback, the former SEAL chases the outlaw on horseback and, with Belle’s help, sets a quick trap. Maybe he’s found his new calling after all.

That night, Kayce and the Marshals crew celebrate at an out-of-town bar called the Bullet ‘n Barrel Saloon. It’s here that we get the rundown on the rest of the Marshals newcomers. Belle was once an undercover specialist with ATF, having joined the team only two months prior; Cruz is from New York and joined the Montana-based Marshals after being kicked off her D.C. unit to avenge her father; and Miles is a member of Broken Rock and a former tribal police officer. Before breaking up the crew for the night, Calvin informs the group that they will be at the mine rally to help keep the peace. Remembering that Tate plans to be there, Kayce offers his assistance as a “one-time deal,” and so Calvin deputizes him. At the mine rally, Kayce and the Marshals patrol the area. When Cruz inquires about all the pictures of dead tribal family members, Miles reveals that the toxins dumped onto the Rez have resulted in an uptick of cancer victims. It’s not long before Kayce catches Tate at the protest, ordering him to go home for his safety. “Since when are you concerned about me being exposed to violence?” Tate asks him. “Since everything we’ve been through,” his father replies. But the warning falls on deaf ears as Tate chastises his father for not speaking up himself. “After how much mom suffered, you should be leading the charge,” he tells him, holding up a picture of Monica in remembrance of all she fought for. Elsewhere, the Helena-based Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) arrives and introduces Special Agent Dan Glenn (Orion Carrington) and Fish & Game Director Owen Kilborn (Chad Michael Collins). Soon after, Kayce reunites with Rainwater and Mo, who are glad to see him getting off East Camp for a change. They note that he hasn’t been around since Monica’s burial on the Rez, but he informs them that she picked out a spot on their land for him to visit her. Sadly, the reunion is interrupted when the Secretary arrives, and Kayce quickly spots a possible triggerman hiding out in the nearby forest. Belle finds an unmarked bag beside the stage, but it’s too late. The bomb goes off, with Rainwater being caught in the crossfire. After Kayce takes Tate home, Marshals catches back up with the rest of the team at the show’s network TV-style headquarters. The team discovers that the explosive was homemade, which isn’t exactly a surprise. Calvin sends Belle to her ATF contacts and Miles to social media to try to piece anything else together. Meanwhile Cruz meets up with Kayce at Bozeman General to question any potential suspects who may have checked themselves in. From what the team finds, everything points to Broken Rock resident Jim Kane (Loren Anthony), whose brother died of cancer last year. At the hospital, Kayce finds Kane (who checked in as a “John Doe” at the hospital), but things get intense when a male nurse arrives and quickly leaves upon realizing that Kayce was there. The temporary deputy follows the man into a bathroom, where they get into a knife fight before Kayce is forced to put him down. It turns out, the man was John Decker (Christopher Brewster), a former co-worker of Kane’s who kidnapped his wife, Tiva (Hayley Archuleta), and daughter, Lucy (Ala Lindsey), as leverage in the bomb making.
“Piya Wiconi” Ends With a New Beginning for Kayce Dutton as ‘Marshals’ Continues

Interrogating Kane, Kayce, and Cruz are joined by Mo as a representative of Broken Rock. The trio tries to get Kane to talk, but he has no interest at first. That is, until Kayce recalls his own experience in Yellowstone Season 2, when the Beck Brothers kidnapped Tate as leverage against his family. “I’ll crawl through Hell to find your family, but I need your help,” Kayce explains, and, with some persuasion from Mo, his cowboy charm works. Kane reveals that his family was held hostage to force him to comply, and that Decker wasn’t aiming for the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, but for Rainwater. Back at HQ, the team links Decker to an anti-government survivalist group called “The Trail Keepers.” Despite his clear results, however, Gifford isn’t too happy that Calvin has brought Kayce on the team. Gifford believes that, after 40 years of conflict, the Duttons only know how to bend the rules rather than uphold the law. But Calvin doesn’t bite. Standing up for Kayce, whom he considers his brother, he makes it clear to his superior that Kayce is welcome on this team — especially since he promised Kane he would see it through.

Although tracking the militia group proves difficult, Miles tracks Kane’s daughter Lucy via a tracker that her mother put on her. This leads the group to a spot just outside of Glacier National Park, but since that’s at least six hours from Bozeman (this author knows from personal experience), they take a helicopter instead. But while Kayce, Calvin, Miles, and Belle head north, back at HQ, Cruz and Gifford discover that someone on the inside fed Decker intel about the Secretary’s arrival days before it was made public — and well before Kane’s family was kidnapped. It turns out that person is none other than Owen Kilborn, who was Decker’s commanding officer back in their Army days. There goes the Marshals’ element of surprise. The team soon finds themselves in a firefight as they approach the house that Kane’s family is held up in. Belle is injured in the scuffle, and Miles is forced into his first kill to protect her. But it’s Kayce who is really the star of this show, and that comes out on the battlefield. Reverting to his old door-kicking SEAL ways, Kayce becomes a soldier once more and even briefly tortures one of the assailants for information on where they’ve taken Lucy. To escape, Kilborn uses her as a human shield, but that doesn’t stop Kayce from taking him right out. Before Kilborn dies, he tells Kayce that he’s “stopped nothing,” leaving us with an ominous warning about what the future of Marshals holds. Back at HQ, Cruz tells the team that Kilborn was hired for $250,000, but they have yet to discover who was behind it. As the episode wraps up, Marshals leaves us with a few dangling threads: Miles’ struggles with taking a life; Calvin facing his divorce and his distance from his young daughter; and Kayce recognizing that Belle isn’t actually Belle Skinner but “Isabel Turek,” a local from a family who bred cutting horses. In the pilot’s final few minutes, Kayce has a heart-to-heart with Calvin about potentially joining the Marshals; with Rainwater and Mo about a “piya wiconi” (Lakota for “new beginning”); and with Tate about his place on the ranch, namely that he wants his son to pursue whatever life he’s interested in, even if it’s not ranching. Lastly, at Monica’s grave on their land, he tells his dead wife that he’s changing paths — as he does, he removes his rifle and shoots the coyote he spotted earlier. Marshals airs Sundays on CBS and is available to stream the next day on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Marshals starts out a bit choppy, trying to distance itself from Yellowstone while retaining all the familiar continuity

Pros & Cons

Kayce Dutton is much better with a badge than without one.
The new Marshals all feel distinct and interesting in their own rights.
Glad they didn’t draw out the “what happened to Monica” question.

Too much repetition in the dialogue (especially regarding the Dutton family).
Four scenes of falling action in a TV pilot is maybe a bit much.
