Zootopia 2 Leaps Onto All-Time Top 10 Chart, Smashing Box Office Record For Animated Movies
Jan 20, 2026
Zootopia 2 has smashed an all-time record for animated movies. The new animated Disney sequel is a direct follow-up to 2016’s Zootopia, which took place in a city populated with anthropomorphic animals and which became the second Walt Disney Animation Studios movie to gross more than $1 billion. The sequel became their fifth billion-dollar movie, also becoming the fastest animated MPA release to hit that milestone. Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, Zootopia 2 has hit a cumulative global box office total of $1.703 billion before the end of its eighth weekend in theaters. This has allowed it to zoom up the all-time worldwide chart, landing within the Top 10, at No. 9. It has also surpassed the global totals of 2019’s The Lion King ($1.662 billion) and 2024’s Inside Out 2 ($1.699 billion) to become the highest-grossing English-language animated movie of all time. The only other animated movie above it is China’s Ne Zha 2, which is the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time and the first to gross more than $1 billion in a single territory. Because both Zootopia 2 and Ne Zha 2 are 2025 releases, this marks the first time that two movies from the same year have been in the Top 10 simultaneously since 2019. In fact, until Spider-Man: No Way Home debuted in 2021, three 2019 movies were in the all-time Top 10, namely Frozen II ($1.454 billion), The Lion King, and Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion).

2025 will match 2019 with three titles in the all-time Top 10 if James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash can outgross Inside Out 2, which it currently seems on a trajectory to do by the end of its run. However, it remains to be seen how long this record would be able to be maintained. If 2025’s Zootopia 2 is unable to climb any higher up the all-time chart by outgrossing Spider-Man: No Way Home, its position in the Top 10 could be under threat before long. 2026 sees the debut of a number of movies with strong IP connections that could become massive billion-dollar hits and topple it from its perch. These impending releases include several prominent animated titles such as the upcoming Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Minions 3, in addition to the live-action releases Avengers: Doomsday, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Moana. All of these movies come from franchises that contain one or more billion-dollar hits, which puts them in direct competition with Zootopia 2 and its 2025 contemporaries.
