10 PlayStation Game Adaptations in Development, According to Twisted Metal Producer

Sep 10, 2023

Summary

PlayStation Productions is partnering with Amazon to create a God of War TV show, which is expected to stay true to the game’s source material. Netflix will be adapting Horizon into a TV series, following a similar approach as The Last of Us by delving into characters and introducing new elements. This collaboration between PlayStation Productions, Amazon, and Netflix is just the beginning, with over 10 projects in development.

Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, shared some exciting news about the future of PlayStation content. After the success of Twisted Metal series led by Anthony Mackie from Peacock, Qizilbash reiterated that a God of War and a Horizon series are already in development. In an interview with MovieWeb, Qizilbash shared:

“So we’ve got a couple of things already in development. We’re partnering with Amazon to do a God of War TV show, which I think is going to be nice. And then we’re partnering with Netflix to take Horizon as a TV show.”

PlayStation Productions has collaborated with Prime Vide to create the God of War TV show, which Qizilbash optimistically believes will be well-received. Additionally, the production company is joining forces with Netflix to adapt Horizon into a TV series.

Per Collider, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television Vernon Sanders previously reassured God of War fans that the upcoming series will stay true to its source. “At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape,” Sanders said. “So what Rafe [Judkins] (showrunner) and Mark [Fergus] and Hawk [Ostby] (writers) have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it’s going to be huge.”

Qizilbash indicated that the Horizon series approach will mirror The Last of Us, with a narrative that adheres closely to the game but includes a more thorough examination of the characters and incorporation of novel components absent from the original gaming experience.

“And we’re going to take the same approach as The Last of Us, where it’s going to be mirroring the storylines, but we’re going to go deep into characters and bring something new that you didn’t experience in the game. So those two are going to be absolutely fantastic.”

The Horizon series will be helmed by Steve Blackman, who is the showrunner of another Netflix hit-series, The Umbrella Academy. During Netflix’s Tudum, Blackman was asked why he wanted to adapt the Horizon Zero Dawn game. “Horizon Zero Dawn is an exceptionally well-crafted game with wonderful characters not often seen in the rank-and-file of the gaming world,” Blackman answered.

The excitement does not stop there, as Qizilbash revealed that there are over 10 projects in various stages of development.

We’ve got we’ve got over 10 projects in various stages of development, so this is only just the beginning. There’s so much more for PlayStation Productions and our partnership with Sony Pictures.

This is only the starting point for PlayStation Productions and their alliance with Sony Pictures. Qizilbash emphasized that all these developments are only the beginning, indicating that there are many more exciting projects to come.

This collaboration between PlayStation Productions and streaming services like Amazon and Netflix signals a promising future for fans of PlayStation games. With a dedication to diving deeper into cherished narratives and characters while infusing new narrative components, these forthcoming TV shows are poised to offer a novel and immersive experience for global audiences.
