4 Years Later, Netflix’s Forgotten 7-Part Thriller Series Officially Confirms Perfect Cast for Long-Awaited Return

If you are on the hunt for a steamy, twisty thriller to add to your watchlist, it’s pretty difficult to scroll through streaming without running into one of Ryan Murphy’s campy cinematic universes. Whether it’s a drama about a serial killer targeting prep school teens, or an anthology series about the life and murders of Jeffrey Dahmer, over the past five years alone, Murphy has created, co-created, or produced several new television series — American Horror Story, Monster, All’s Fair, The Beauty, and The Shards being a few of his buzziest recent titles. While their quality is up for debate amongst critics, there is no denying that Murphy’s quantity and viewership numbers are wildly impressive. The Watcher, which debuted in 2022 on Netflix, was one of those recent standouts that saw mixed reviews — currently holding a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of reporting — but performed incredibly well on streaming. It was watched for over 273.2 million hours worldwide in its first two weeks, and made its way to the top of streaming charts in over 65 countries, according to Deadline. In the world of streaming, sometimes viewership numbers can mean more for a promising second installment than the reviews, which is exactly the case for this neighborhood-of-horrors story, as The Watcher will officially be coming back for a Season 2.
This news comes four years after the first season’s debut on the platform. As reported by Deadline, Season 2 will be officially going into production this fall, but exact plot points have yet to be revealed. In addition to the series’ return, it was also announced that a familiar fictional real estate agent will be making a grand return: Karen Calhoun, the ambitious realtor played by Jennifer Coolidge, who sold Nora (Naomi Watts) and Dean Brannock (Bobby Cannavale) their mysterious house of horrors. Alongside Coolidge, original cast members Watts, Cannavale, Margo Martindale, and Isabel Gravitt will also be returning for more suburban secrets, as the show’s pivotal gang of nosy neighbors.
The Watcher follows newly moved-in neighbors Nora and Dean as they adjust to what was supposed to be their new suburban dream home, only to find themselves beset by a barrage of menacing letters from an anonymous stalker. What unfolds is a seven-episode thriller that escalates to the hiring of a private investigator and increasing hostility from the neighbors. Season 1 of The Watcher is currently available on Netflix, and the Season 2 release schedule has yet to be announced.
