Taron Egerton Says He Won’t Be Playing Wolverine, Doubts He’ll Ever Join the MCU

Jun 30, 2023

Many fans have long been rooting for Taron Egerton to be cast as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but according to the actor himself, that potential casting is no longer possible. For the past two decades, Hugh Jackman has been synonymous with Wolverine after playing the role in the X-Men franchise along as his own solo spinoffs. He’ll be back in that role once again for the upcoming sequel Deadpool 3, so fans haven’t seen the last of Jackman’s Logan just yet.

Be that as it may, there are also plans to bring the X-Men into the MCU, effectively rebooting the mutant superhero group. It’s not yet clear when exactly they’ll be brought into the fold. In a new interview with Total Film (via The Direct), Egerton addressed the Wolverine rumors, stating his belief that he’s getting too old to play the MCU’s Logan, presuming that the new X-Men will be younger versions of the characters. The 34-year-old also admits that he’s not as interested in joining the MCU as he was a decade ago, starting to feel

“Well, the one that I mentioned is up for grabs, but I’m too old for it now. I think that ship has probably sailed. Yeah, that whole Wolverine thing – I get asked about it and no matter what you say, it gets turned into what people want you to say about it. I’m not going to be the guy to play Wolverine. There’s no signs pointing towards that being the thing.”

Egerton goes on to admit that he’s not as interested in joining the MCU at this point as he would have been a decade ago, and while he’s not shutting that door entirely, he’s getting doubtful that he’ll ever be a part of that world, given how he sees his career moving forward.

“I just don’t know if I’m maybe… I don’t know. Maybe I’m getting to the point where that’s not what I want any more. I don’t know. I’d never say never, and I do love those movies. I’ve really enjoyed watching them over the past 10, 15 years. But whether I… You know, it may not be that they’re the right thing for me any more. I think maybe I’m past the point where that felt like the right thing [for my career].”

Taron Egerton Has No Plans to Join the MCU, But Never Say Never
Apple TV+

Egerton is still a young man, and even if it turns out that Marvel wants a younger actor to play their next Wolverine, there will still be plenty of time along with other opportunities to get the actor involved in the MCU. It’s notable that Egerton is leaving the door open, even if he isn’t exactly holding out hope or campaigning for any roles. Perhaps he’ll be a part of that world soon enough, even if it’s not as part of the X-Men as many fans had been hoping for.

While it remains to be seen if Egerton ever joins the MCU, fans can next see him as the star of Tetris when the movie starts streaming on Apple TV+ on March 31, 2023.
