Alan Ritchson has, somewhat quietly, become one of streaming’s more dependable stars, which is not necessarily where you would have expected his career to land back when he was doing Smallville supporting work and Blue Mountain State. Reacher turned him into a genuine Amazon franchise anchor, with Season 4 pulling more than 5.5 billion minutes viewed in its first four weeks according to Nielsen, and the series has remained above 90% with critics across all four seasons. That kind of consistency is unusually hard to sustain, which is part of why the first real test of the broader Reacher universe was always going to be what happened when Ritchson stepped mostly out of the frame. Spin-offs centered on fan-favorite supporting players do not have a great batting average, and for every Better Call Saul there are plenty that arrive with far less staying power. This makes it fairly notable that Neagley, the Maria Sten-led offshoot that debuted all eight episodes on Prime Video on Sept. 16, has opened with a Certified Fresh 92% critics’ on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an 85% audience score, and has, at least according to current chart tracking, overtaken its own parent series on Amazon’s global streaming chart in less than a week.

Neagley’s score has actually climbed since the review embargo lifted, opening in the low 80s from a dozen reviews before settling into the 90s as more critics weighed in, and it now sits within touching distance of Reacher season 4’s 94%. The show itself shifts the focus to Sten’s Frances Neagley, now working as a private investigator in Chicago and drawn into a wider conspiracy after a friend from her past turns up dead. Nick Santora, who developed Reacher, co-created the series with Nicholas Wootton, and one of the smarter decisions the show appears to make is resisting the urge to simply duplicate the original. Reacher works as a drifter-style anthology built around a wisecracking human tank of a lead, while Neagley roots its story in one city and leans into a colder temperament that the writing seems to treat as an asset. Ritchson does appear as Jack Reacher, but only briefly, which plays more like a deliberate passing of the baton. Critics have mostly split along one fault line, namely how much the show suffers without Ritchson’s particular gravity. RogerEbert’s review put the concern most cleanly, observing that while “Reacher” has a Francis Neagley, “Neagley” doesn’t have a Jack Reacher. Variety was harsher, dismissing the series as “a collection of hard-surface, soft-heart tropes that never achieve independent momentum.”

The positive notices outnumber those complaints considerably, though. Collider’s David Caballero wrote that the series “successfully delivers a compelling, intimate mystery that will satisfy those who are already Reacher-pilled.” Amazon hasn’t announced a season 2 yet, but with the show sitting at number one globally per FlixPatrol, Reacher itself already renewed for a fifth season, and the clear strategic logic of having a franchise entry to air during the main show’s gaps, it would be mildly surprising if this stayed a one-off.
