Even though Halloween is over, demand for scary-themed series remains high. Amazon Prime Video has renewed Carrie for Season 2, Crystal Lake had a strong debut on Peacock, and HBO Max recently debuted a surprise episode of It: Welcome to Derry. New seasons of Alien: Earth, Interview with the Vampire, and the Emmy-winning horror comedy Widow’s Bay are being produced.

Many more horror-themed television shows are in development, including A Conjuring series in the works at HBO. Even Disney+ is getting in on the action, having ordered a series based on Afterlife with Archie, in which the Archie comics gang battles zombies. Now the producers of Get Out are looking to develop a new series based on the works of an acclaimed gothic author that could be the next The Haunting of Hill House.

Deadline reports that Helen Black (Life and Death in the Warehouse) and Jeff Howard (The Haunting of Hill House) are developing The Invited, a supernatural mystery thriller series inspired by bestselling author Wendy Webb’s ghost story novels. The show is not based on one specific book, as Webb does not have a book titled The Invited. Instead, the television series will draw from Webb’s collective work to create an interconnected world.

Season 1 will adapt Webb’s book The End of Temperance Dare. Wendy Webb’s books are set in Wharton, a fictional haunted lakeside town. The husband-and-wife producing team of Shaun and Yvette Yates Redick acquired the rights to Webb’s work and will produce The Invited through their production company, Impossible Dream Entertainment. The show will be made in collaboration with the UK’s Wall to Wall to develop and executive produce. No network or streamer has picked up The Invited yet.

Shaun Redick told Deadline, “Wendy Webb’s novels have it all—drama, romance, tension and scares—with rich characters and haunting mysteries made for series television.” Yvette Yates Redick added: “The best ghost stories don’t just scare you. They follow you home. Wendy’s stories do exactly that, and we can’t wait to invite audiences in.”

Regarding the upcoming adaptation of her work, author Wendy Webb said:

“When Shaun Redick, one of the producers of the stunning Get Out— which I saw three times in the theater — contacted me about adapting my work into a series, I had to sit, staring into space, for a good long while. When he told me Jeff Howard, a writer and producer of Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill House — which I have binged-watched more times than I care to admit — was involved, life got a little surreal. Then, I met the brilliant Helen Black, and I started bragging to whoever would listen. I am honored and privileged beyond measure to be working with these geniuses of the genre to bring my books to life.”

Webb specializes in supernatural and gothic suspense fiction, and her most recent story, The Witches of Santo Stefano, was published in 2024. While details about The Invited are scarce, if the show’s first season adapts The End of Temperance Dare, the book offers a few details. Published in June 2017, the story centers on a former tuberculosis sanatorium turned art retreat with a supernatural mystery at its core. See a full list of Webb’s work below:
