89-Episode Dark Fantasy Action Masterpiece With a “Perfect” Ending Stages Streaming Comeback 3 Years Later

There’s a theory in anime circles that the truly great series never actually end, they just go dormant between waves. Demon Slayer, for example, has proved it when compilation films kept the fandom at full boil through years without new episodes. The strategy only works when the underlying story has real staying power, though, because you can’t manufacture a resurgence for something audiences have quietly moved past.

Which makes it worth paying attention when a completed series with no new episodes on the horizon starts climbing streaming charts again entirely on its own momentum. Attack on Titan, the 89-episode dark fantasy epic that aired its final episode back in Nov. 2023, is currently sitting at number eight on Crunchyroll’s most-watched rankings per FlixPatrol, wedged between Solo Leveling and this season’s crop of new isekai, three years after it supposedly said everything it had to say.

‘Attack on Titan’ Is Climbing the Crunchyroll Charts Again Three Years After Ending

The franchise has spent the back half of 2026 in a quiet but coordinated revival. Sept. 9 was formally recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association as Attack on Titan Day, marking the date Hajime Isayama’s manga debuted in 2009, and the occasion came with a flood of announcements including a dedicated YouTube channel, free manga chapter unlocks, and new commemorative art from Isayama himself.

Question 1 of 3

The compilation film Guren no Yumiya returned to Japanese theaters on Oct. 23 with premium ScreenX and 4DX presentations, and The Last Attack, the theatrical cut of the finale, already had a well-received 4K re-release in North American theaters back in May. Add Koei Tecmo’s Attack on Titan 3, arriving Dec. 10 with a new MAPPA-produced opening, plus a stage musical heading out on a world tour next year, and you have a franchise working every channel at once.

Attack on Titan Keeps Pulling Fans Back Even After the Finale

What Attack on Titan has that most completed shows don’t is an ending that many fans have ultimately come to see as the right one, even if they didn’t accept it immediately. Isayama’s conclusion, which the anime adapted faithfully across its drawn-out Final Season, was divisive on arrival, but part of that reaction came from how uncompromising it was. Rather than delivering a cleaner or more crowd-pleasing resolution, it followed the story’s logic to a bleak but arguably necessary endpoint. That’s a big reason the series holds up so well on rewatch: once you know where Eren Yeager’s story ends, the whole narrative snaps into clearer focus, and the early seasons start to look even more carefully constructed than they did the first time through.
