Netflix Scores Big With New 10-Part Sci-Fi Action Masterpiece That’s Taking Over on Streaming

Netflix’s sci-fi action masterpiece is back with a new season and, while it might not be as good as the first season, it’s still a global sensation on streaming. Netflix has released some incredibly highly rated sci-fi shows over the past few years. We’re not talking about Stranger Things. We mean the likes of Dark, Love, Death + Robots, Black Mirror, Altered Carbon (just the first season, though), and Pantheon. In 2022, Netflix released what is undeniably its best sci-fi show to date, and it was a 100%-rated sci-fi epic. Season 2 just dropped on Netflix, and it’s raking in the viewers by the millions.

TUDUM just released its weekly viewership figures, and it has revealed just how successful Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has been. The series raced to the top of the global streaming charts upon its release. In the days since, it has slowly dropped down the top 10. But after its first seven days on streaming, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is the third most popular non-English series on Netflix this week. It earned a staggering 4.6 million views during its first week, with a ginormous 21.9 million hours viewed. Season 4 of Lupin currently holds the top spot with 6.4 million views, while Doctor X: Mafia in White is in second place (and has held a spot in the top 10 for three consecutive weeks).

Overall, that makes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 the sixth most popular series overall on Netflix this week. Below is in first, with 7.7 million views, while Nobody Wants This Season 2 sits just behind Lupin in third with 6.2 million views.

‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ Couldn’t Live Up to the Original

To call Season 1 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners a masterpiece would be a drastic understatement. It holds a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 95% audience score. It also won Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year in 2023, beating Demon Slayer‘s Entertainment District Arc, Attack on Titan‘s final season, Lycoris Recoil, and Ranking of Kings‘ second court.

Season 2 moved on from David’s story to follow a new set of undesirables in Night City. The second season was still great. it earned a 75% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a 65% audience score (admittedly, many of those user scores are harsh one-star reviews because it wasn’t as good as the first season). However, the disparity between the two is clear.

Will ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Get a Third Season?

At the time of writing, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners hasn’t been renewed for a third season. However, there could still be many, many more seasons in the future. “There’s a lot of stories to tell in Night City and beyond, so you never know,” said showrunner Bartosz Sztybor. “There always needs to be a perfect story and a perfect director, artist, or a studio that will be able to pull off this story. So if the stars align and will be able to create something high quality again, then yes. But if there’s no perfect story or no perfect director with his unique or her unique voice, then maybe it will be just two Edgerunners.”
