Michael Mann’s Heat is finally getting a sequel! But who cares? Because that movie is still years away. In the meantime, Apple TV is about to drop the perfect Heat 2 replacement, and it’s just over a week away. After announcing Heat 2 in 2016, Michael Mann finally got the green light from Warner Bros. in 2023, and the long-awaited sequel is finally gaining traction. Production won’t begin until January 2027, but the wait is far shorter for Apple TV’s new cat-and-mouse heist thriller.

On Nov. 13, Apple TV debuts its latest crime thriller. Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan go head-to-head as an FBI agent and a thief pulling off a gigantic heist. 12 12 12 is Apple’s newest series, and it literally looks as though Heat was remade for the modern streaming era. It’s a unique title, one that plays into the show’s premise. The official synopsis described it best, reading:

“A heist takes 12 months to plan, 12 hours to execute-and a thief not caught within 12 days won’t be caught at all; across three intertwined timelines, an FBI agent and a career criminal face off in a deadly game of cat and mouse through Europe.”

If that doesn’t sound like a Michael Mann crime thriller, then nothing does. 12 12 12‘s first two episodes debut on Apple TV on Nov. 13 (they had one job with the release date; release it on Dec. 12, and they failed). The series will run for eight total episodes – again, was 12 episodes too much to ask for?!

’12 12 12 ‘ Is a Star-Studded Crime Thriller Filled With Twists

The above trailer has already teased a few twists, but we feel like the best is still yet to come. Silent Witness writers Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble created the series. The series also stars Sallie Harmsen, Julius Feldmeier, Miklos Beres, and Pit Bukowski.

12 12 12 is the latest in a long line of crime thrillers available on Apple TV. The Jon Hamm-led Your Friends & Neighbors is undeniably the most popular. But Presumed Innocent, Black Bird, Sugar, and the recently released Nocturne are all fantastic. The reviews for 12 12 12 haven’t been released yet. If Apple TV believes in the series, expect them to drop a few days before its release. If Apple TV is concerned about the show, the embargo will likely end on the day of release.

What’s Going On With ‘Heat 2’?

Not only is Heat 2, the long-awaited sequel to arguably the greatest crime thriller ever made, finally in development, but it also has an absolutely killer cast. The film might be a legacy sequel, but it’s set very soon after the original film. Leonardo DiCaprio is playing Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer’s character in the original), who will lead the movie. Christian Bale takes over for Al Pacino as Lt. Vincent Hanna, and Stephen Graham is playing De Niro’s Neil McCauley.

The sequel is based on Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner’s 2022 novel of the same name, which is set in the immediate aftermath of the original movie. Heat 2 also explores the backstories of the original crew and their various crimes after the original film. Heat 2 doesn’t have a release date.
