Jul 4, 2023

Alan Arkin has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary actor was born in New York City on March 26, 1934 and began studying acting at age 10. He went on to a career of more than 100 television and movie titles as well as a series of theatrical roles. He won a Tony in 1963 for his performance in Enter Laughing followed by an Academy Award for the 2006’s Little Miss Sunshine.

News has now broken that Arkin died at his home in Carlsbad, California. The cause of his death was not revealed. People received a statement from Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirming the news and lamenting the loss of “a uniquely talented force of nature.” Read their statement below:

Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.

Alan Arkin’s Hollywood Legacy Explained

Arkin’s decades-spanning screen career began with small roles in the late 1950s. However, it wasn’t until 1966 that he became more recognized after he was nominated for an Oscar for The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming, his first of four nominations. In addition to his Little Miss Sunshine win, the other two nominations were for 1968’s The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and 2012’s Argo, proving the star retained his strong commitment to his craft throughout the many years he was onscreen.

His career also continued long after his Argo nomination, including the well-regarded Netflix series The Kominsky Method and what has likely become his final movie role, voicing Wild Knuckles in the 2022 box office hit Minions: The Rise of Gru. Likewise, in the years between his two sets of Oscar nominations, Arkin participated in many other prominent projects. This includes varied titles in both the comedy and drama genres like 1970’s Catch-22, 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, and 1992’s Glengarry Glen Ross.

Alan Arkin will be sorely missed by his friends, family, and fans. Already, tributes have come pouring in across social media from those who admired him and those who worked alongside him. This includes Patton Oswalt, who voiced a character opposite Arkin in a 2016 episode of BoJack Horseman and asked “Did ANYONE have the range Alan Arkin had?”
