Danai Gurira Teases Marvel’s ‘Full Monty’ (Again)
Jul 10, 2023
Danai Gurira, who dazzled viewers in a Jason Wu-designed black evening gown on the red carpet at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12, teased that there will be a Marvel Studios spinoff series centered on the actress’s breakout character, Okoye, who has appeared in 2018’s Blank Panther and 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
When Okoye was introduced in Black Panther, she was the head of the Dora Milaje, an all-female warrior force that is in charge of protecting Wakanda’s royal family. However, in Wakanda Forever, she is dismissed from the Dora by Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) after failing to protect Shuri (Letitia Wright) from Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the Talokan warriors. Devastated by the rejection, Okoye leaves Wakanda (although she temporarily returns for the film’s final battle in new suit designed by Shuri, officially bringing the Midnight Angels from Roxane Gay and Alitha Martinez’s comic series Black Panther: World of Wakanda, leading some fans to speculate that the new series could be based on the series).
Entertainment Tonight spoke with Gurira on the Academy Award’s red carpet, where the star responded to the long-standing rumors that the ex-Dora Milaje General is getting her own Disney+ series after what happened to the character in the sequel to the 2018 film. By the end of Wakanda Forever, Okoye is no longer part of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje security force and leaves the small African country to wander the earth like Cain in “Kung Fu” (a plot point that is revealed in the Black Panther sequel’s deleted scenes).
“I’ve been told I can speak of it vaguely. So, I will vaguely respond,” Gurira told ET, laughing. “However, I guess the idea behind the story like that, if one were to exist, would be to explore the character in ways that we haven’t done yet. But who knows?”

Danai Gurira Has Teased an Okoye Spinoff Before
Marvel Studios
This isn’t the first time Gurira has teased an Okoye spinoff series. In May 2021, it was revealed that the actress had been tapped to return as Okoye in “an origin spinoff series for Disney+.”
The Walking Dead actress also teased the Okoye spinoff in January 2022 during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. She told Colbert about the rumors, “I have been told that I can gently allude to this possibility. So, I am gently alluding, just gently.”
Colbert teasingly replied, “You gently alluding is the Marvel version of a full monty. I can’t believe I got anything out of you.”
