Michael Gandolfini Is ‘Giddy’ to Join the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again

Jul 11, 2023

There’s been a lot of discussion with Marvel fans about the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. The Disney+ series will bring back Charlie Cox from the previous Daredevil series to reprise his role as Matt Murdock, this following the character’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a special appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. At least two other familiar faces from that show will be joining Cox, as it’s been confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will also bring back Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk and Frank “Punisher” Castle, respectively.

But there’s still so much that’s not yet known about the new show. Even with multiple returning characters, it’s still unclear if the new show will serve as a continuation of the prior Daredevil series, or if it will be a total reboot that just happens to bring back some of the same actors to play new incarnations. In any case, among those joining the returning cast members to appear in a new role is actor Michael Gandolfini, who played his late father James Gandolfini’s character Tony Soprano in the Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark. After becoming a part of the world of The Sopranos, where he garnered some great praise, the MCU would turn out to be one of his next stops.

Speaking about his mystery role in the series with Entertainment Tonight, Gandolfini did not offer any details about who he might be playing. But the actor did say just how excited he was to get started with his work on the show. He also teased that fans will be just as thrilled to see returning characters that they first met in Daredevil. As Gandolfini explains:

“I’m very giddy about it, and very excited. I’m counting the days until we start, and I’m honored to be a part of it. We get to shoot in New York, and people are going to be really happy to see these characters that we previously saw in the Netflix series in the MCU.”

Could Michael Gandolfini Be Playing Foggy Nelson?

While Gandolfini does tease the returning characters, it’s also been revealed that at least one character from the other Daredevil show has been recast. Sandrine Holt will take over the role of Vanessa Fisk, the wife of D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk who was previously portrayed by Ayelet Zurer. It’s not yet clear why the role was recast, and if this is because Born Again is going to be a reboot that brings back some Daredevil characters while completely changing others.

With that said, it was recently reported that Daredevil stars Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson would not be coming back for Daredevil: Born Again as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. Given the secrecy surrounding Gandolfini’s casting, coupled with the reports of Henson getting left out, it wouldn’t be a stretch to speculate that Gandolfini is playing a Foggy Nelson variant. The 23-year-old actor is considerably younger than Henson, but if the idea is to differentiate the new Foggy, the possible recasting is something that would make sense. Still, no one has yet confirmed who Gandolfini is playing, so all we can do for now is guess.

Daredevil: Born Again will be filming throughout the year and is expected to arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2024.
