Dead City Episode 5 Twist Sets Up a Negan vs Maggie Showdown in Season Finale Teaser
Jul 27, 2023
The Walking Dead: Dead City has been playing with an unlikely alliance between once sworn enemies Negan and Maggie from the beginning. As the spin-off series heads into its final episode, a twist in this weekend’s penultimate installment has set up a showdown between the pair that has been on the cards for some time. A new teaser has delivered a glimpse of what is to come, while the show’s star Lauren Cohan recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the latest twist is one that even she did not see coming.
Episode 5 of Dead City, entitled “The Stories We Tell Ourselves”, revealed that Maggie had not exactly been truthful about events that have led up to this point. As reveled this week, while series villain The Croat was responsible for kidnapping Maggie’s son Herschel, his purpose was to do an exchange for Negan, something that Maggie had not previously disclosed. The episode ends with Ginny discovering the truth and attempting to warn Negan of what is coming. Speaking of the twist, Cohan said:
“I was so glad when [showrunner Eli Jorné] came with this story and that this was the twist. It was something I just didn’t see coming and couldn’t have seen coming. It’s like, what would you do? If somebody said to you, here’s this person and he may have changed, but you may need to say these things, what would you do?”
Negan may have turned over a new leaf towards the end of The Walking Dead, but as the spin-off has shown, he is still more than capable of returning to his brutal ways when necessary. The question is how he will react to Maggie’s deception.

While there was one point when Jeffrey Dean Morgan almost quit the role of Negan, he thankfully stuck it out to the end of the main series, which resulted in him taking center stage along with Cohan’s Maggie in the first of three major spin-offs. Speaking back in 2021, Morgan expressed his hope that Negan would get more time to shine. He said at the time:
“We’ll see. I mean, Negan could still find his way six feet under [before Season 11 concludes], so that could be a problem unless it’s a prequel. But there are still stories to be told with Negan. I kind of know how the season has worked itself so far, and we’re cracking open windows here and there that would lend themselves to more Negan story.”
Now we have been given just that, and with there being talk of the show returning for more potential seasons, it seems unlikely that either of the series protagonists are going to meet an untimely end in the season finale. This week will see The Walking Dead panel arrive at a very subdued and pulled back San Diego Comic-Con, which could see more information revealed about just what the future holds beyond the Dead City season finale.
