The Spider-Verse Almost Introduced Marvel’s Coolest Green Goblin Of All Time
Aug 5, 2023
Summary
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse almost featured a unique Green Goblin variant, including a Ghost Rider-inspired design with a fiery skull face. The movie’s unused Green Goblin designs, such as one inspired by artist Mike Mignola, could make an appearance in the trilogy finale, which promises even more multiverse characters. Unfortunately, the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but this decision was made to ensure the sequel lives up to its potential.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse almost introduced Marvel’s coolest Green Goblin of all time. The animated sequel had a quite difficult job, having to be a worthy follow-up to the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. However, the movie easily accomplished its goal, with the Spider-Verse sequel getting even bolder with its exploration of the multiverse, which could have seen the debut of an exciting Green Goblin variant.
On Twitter, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse character designer Kris Anka shared unused designs for Green Goblin variants that could have appeared in the movie.
Among the exciting designs is one of what appears to be a Ghost Rider version of the Spider-Man villain, with Green Goblin having a fiery skull for a face and his glider also being appropriately taken over by the Spirit of Vengeance.
The Spider-Verse’s Unused Green Goblin Designs Also Cut Comic Reference From The Sequel
While there is a chance the reference made it into a blink-and-you-miss-it moment in the movie, the presence of a Green Goblin variant rooted in the comics among Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s Easter eggs hasn’t been confirmed. The comic book reference comes from the Green Goblin design inspired by the distinct style of artist Mike Mignola, who is famous for being the creator of Hellboy.
Some unused designs from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse could make their way onto the franchise’s trilogy finale, which is expected to feature even more shocking multiverse characters to close off Miles Morales’ animated film trilogy in style. With multiple versions of Miles, Peter Parker, and even Gwen Stacy set to appear in the movie, maybe one or two Green Goblin variants could find their way into the story.
Sadly, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will likely take a little more time to give fans what they desire, as Miles’ trilogy finale was removed from the schedule amid Sony’s Marvel movie release date changes. Initially scheduled for a March 29, 2024, release, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently undated. The move came due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with writers and actors not available to work on the film. Sony then decided to give the necessary time to be sure that the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sequel is the best it can be.
