The Russo Brothers Would Love to Direct The DCU’s New Batman Movie
Aug 9, 2023
When it comes to discussing superhero movies, Joe and Anthony Russo are frequently being asked when they will be returning to direct another movie for Marvel Studios. However, in a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the Avengers: Endgame directors were asked about potentially jumping on board James Gunn’s DCU plans and they would be more than open to directing the first movie for the newest iteration of Batman.
James Gunn and Peter Safran announced that their first wave of DCU movies will include The Brave and the Bold, and that will introduce another new star to the role of the Dark Knight. While there is currently no word on who this could be, there is also no director attached to the project, which could open a door for the Russos to step into another huge superhero arena. When asked about potentially joining the DC world, they said:
ANTHONY RUSSO: “We don’t get asked a lot about DC characters.”
JOE RUSSO: “Obviously James over there running it, it would be a no-brainer. We love him to death. We love the direction he’s going to take that world in. You know he’s gonna be inventive with it. And favorite DC characters? I mean, man. There are so many good ones. I always answer based on the comics I collected as a kid, and the two comics I collected the most were Spider-Man — actually, the three — were Spider-Man. X-Men and Batman. But there have been a lot of iterations of Batman, so I feel like that’s an obvious answer.”
ANTHONY RUSSO: “But, you know, it’s hard not to answer that. Here’s how you know we haven’t actually gotten literal about it and specific about it is because, yeah, Batman would be my favorite character for my entire childhood. But obviously, it’s been well explored.”

The Russo Brothers Could Still Return To The MCU
While there was a lot of talk about the Russo Brothers potentially directing Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, that now seems to have become just a rumor based comments by the pair as to which MCU story they would like to direct if given the chance. After their work on Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, two of the biggest movies of all-time, it would seem like a given that Kevin Feige would want the pair back behind the camera at some point the future.
However, Anthony and Joe Russo have, for the time being, moved onto other things, and one of those things is their new Prime Video series Citadel, a thriller about a group of agents who have their memories wiped following the fall of the global spy agency Citatel, who much try and recall their past in order to stop the powerful syndicate, Manticore. Additionally, the pair are working on a number of other series for Prime Video, as well as a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and series’ based on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Warriors.
