The Flash Director Explains Why The Movie Had to Be Delayed So Many Times.

Aug 15, 2023

The Flash will be speeding towards the new DCU when it arrives in theaters this summer, and for many it has been a long time coming. The movie, like many DC projects has suffered numerous delays resulting in the film’s release almost seeming destined not to happen. However, for director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti the extra time was exactly what the film needed to be able to explode onto the big screen as the best movie it could be.

There have been many issues in the last couple of years with movies being rushed out with visual effects that are heavily criticized for their incomplete look, and others ditching a theatrical release in favor of heading straight to streaming. For The Flash, this was never an option and the delay’s faced by the Covid pandemic has just given the team more time to work on the final movie. The director/producer team told Box Office Pro Magazine:

“The only way to release The Flash is in theaters. Warner’s knew that, and we knew that. Of course, it feels great, We have worked solidly on The Flash for almost four years. We are very grateful to WB for working with us on using all this time to make the movie better. The pandemic allowed us to have a longer development, and, on the other side of shooting, it allowed us to have the time to explore visual effects like never before. We all knew that The Flash belongs in movie theaters, and we were happy to wait the right time.”

Will The Flash Be A Hit This Summer?
Warner Bros.

A year ago, the chances of The Flash being a massive success seemed to be getting slimmer by the month, with the film being hit with several delays and lead star Ezra Miller making headlines for all the wrong reasons. However, even after the reveal that the old DCEU would be ending and James Gunn will usher in a new DCU regime in the coming years, something about The Flash seemed to change.

The film is already hyped for a number of reasons. It brings the DC multiverse to life for the first time, adapts one of the best know stories of The Flash’s comic book runs to the big screen and it brings Michael Keaton back as Batman for the first time in three decades. If that wasn’t enough, test audiences have reported called the film one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. That is high praise indeed, but also a very nice sound bite for marketing to use as the release date approaches.

The Flash will be seen by a new audience this week at CinemaCon, and a new trailer will also be released to give another look at what is quickly turning into one of the must-watch cinema events of the summer. Will it surpass other recent DC movies at the box office? There are many people who will certainly be hoping it can after the disappointment of Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods.

The Flash will hit cinemas on June 16.
