Spider-Man 4 Production Now on Hold Amid Writers Strike

Aug 19, 2023

A further sequel in the MCU/Sony Spider-Man series is in development; producer Amy Pascal has confirmed. Though it might take a little longer to make it to the big screen as production has now been paused amid the ongoing writers strike. Speaking with Variety, Pascal revealed that they are now waiting for the strike to conclude, but that they are ready to get started on Spider-Man 4.

“Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are. We’re in the process, but the writers strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”

The last we saw of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Zendaya’s MJ was in 2021’s hugely successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, during which the wall-crawler must seek out the help of Doctor Strange, asking the Master of the Mystic Arts to cast a spell on the world and make everyone forget his exposed secret identity as Peter Parker. However, Strange’s spell goes horribly awry, leading to unwanted guests entering their universe.

Those guests included all manner of characters from across the multiverse, including Jamie Foxx as Electro, Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus and, in the worst kept secret in cinematic history, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their previous incarnations of Spider-Man.

A fourth Spider-Man outing has been called a “top priority” for Sony Pictures which, considering that the Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed over $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office, comes as little surprise. But, much like audiences, they’re just going to have to be patient.

Sony Has Several Spider-Man Projects in Development
Sony Pictures

During this interview, Pascal outlined the plans for several different Spider-Man projects and spinoffs that are currently in development at Sony Pictures alongside Spider-Man 4. One such project is a live action adaptation of Miles Morales’ story, with Pascal saying, “You’ll see all of it. It’s all happening,” when asked if the character would ever make the leap from animation to real life.

Producer Avi Arad meanwhile has teased a standalone adventure for Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman, revealing that it is coming “sooner than you expect.”

Audiences will next dive back into the multiverse in the imminent animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Picking up with Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, the sequel finds the web-slinging pair coming face-to-face with the Spider-Society, the protectors of the multiverse. But, when Miles finds himself at odds with Miguel and the Spider-Society on how to handle the threat and must redefine what it means to be a hero so that he can save his beloved ones and the people.

The reaction to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have been hugely positive, with MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman calling the movie “A Spectacular Sequel Surpasses the Original.” Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya and Oscar Isaac, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to land in theaters on June 2.
