Yellowstone Will Debut in Fall Amid WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes, CBS Confirms

Aug 19, 2023

Summary

Yellowstone, the Emmy-nominated series, will make its broadcast debut on CBS on September 17, offering a chance for new viewers to catch up from the beginning. The conclusion of season five was disrupted due to production issues, resulting in Kevin Costner not returning to the program and a spin-off sequel series with Matthew McConaughey in the works. CBS will also feature other high-profile shows in the fall lineup, including Survivor and The Amazing Race, as well as college football games and special events like a marathon commemorating 20 years of NCIS.

Fans of Yellowstone are going to get to visit the fabled train station again real soon. And for those who aren’t familiar with creators Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s neo-Western, Yellowstone is making its broadcast debut on CBS (per Deadline) this fall for those who are officially late to the party.

CBS will begin airing episodes of the Dutton family drama on September 17 at 8:30 p.m. EDT. The Yellowstone premiere immediately follows double-header action on the gridiron as the NFL enters Week 2 of the 2023 season. The start time for Yellowstone will vary slightly weekend to weekend depending on whether the network is carrying one or two NFL games. Viewers can expect Yellowstone to air at 8 p.m. after single-header matchups and at 9 p.m. after doubleheaders.

For those who didn’t jump on the Yellowstone bandwagon at the beginning, this is a great opportunity to catch up on the Emmy nominated series from the get-go. Eventually, new episodes of Sheridan and Linson’s creation will eventually air, but until the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes end, reruns will have to suffice.

Yellowstone fans were left in the lurch when it comes to the conclusion of season five. The final episodes were originally supposed to drop on the Paramount Network over the summer, but the Kevin Costner controversy put the kibosh on completing production. The end result: Costner will not return to the program. And a spin-off sequel series starring Matthew McConaughey will eventually come to fruition once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes end.

Yellowstone co-star Luke Grimes recently revealed that no filming has been done with regard to the second half of season five. However, CBS still has four-and-a-half seasons of Dutton family drama to offer audiences come September 17. But Yellowstone isn’t the only high-profile series highlighting the upcoming fall lineup. Beginning September 27, Wednesdays will be devoted to a pair of reality shows: Survivor (8 p.m.) and The Amazing Race at 9:30 p.m.

Both Survivor season 45 and The Amazing Race’s 35th season find themselves in new time slots. For college football fans, the annual tradition of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) on CBS premieres on Saturday, September 16 when the back-to-back NCAA National Champion Georgia Bulldogs welcome the South Carolina Gamecocks to Athens to play between the hedges. The SEC has won four-straight national championships and five of the last six since 2017.

On Saturday, September 25 a short marathon commemorating 20 years of NCIS will air from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Meanwhile, new episodes of The Price Is Right at Night premiere on Monday, October 2, and Let’s Make a Deal returns on Friday, November 3. The CBS fall schedule officially kicks off with the Big Brother live show on Thursday, September 14 at 8 p.m.
