Disney+ Attempts To Adapt The Popular YA Supernatural Series In December

Sep 19, 2023

While spawning a sequel, the original ‘Percy Jackson’ film, released in 2010, wasn’t the massive hit people were expecting. Aiming to be another ‘Harry Potter,’ the original film just didn’t strike a chord with critics or fans, despite being based on a massively popular series of YA books. Well, the author of those books, Rick Riordan, has now taken a creative role in the latest attempt to bring his books to life.

As seen in the trailer for the new Disney+ series “Percy Jackson & The Olympians,” the show is treading familiar ground as the first film. There’s a young Percy Jackson, just a normal kid trying to fit in at school. However, things go awry when he finds out that he’s actually a demigod and has supernatural powers. Then he’s called on a mysterious quest to help locate Zeus’ lightning bolt.
The series stars the trio of Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries. They’re joined by an all-star guest cast that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Megan Mullally, Toby Stephens, Virginia Kull, Jason Mantzoukas, Jay Duplass, Glynn Turman, Lance Reddick, Adam Copeland, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Olivea Morton, Suzanne Cryer, Timm Sharp, and Timothy Omundson. The first two episodes are written by Riordan and Jon Steinberg and directed by James Bobin.
“Percy Jackson & The Olympians” hits Disney+ on December 20. You can watch the teaser below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt.
