The MCU Needs a Reboot According to Arrowverse Co-Creator

Sep 28, 2023

The MCU should get its own Crisis on Infinite Earths style event, according to one of the men behind another huge superhero franchise.

After dominating the comic book adaptations world for a really long time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going through a hard time lately. Although Marvel Studios movies and tv shows are still at the top of the box office and viewership charts, things are not like it used to be for Kevin Feige’s lead studio, with many recent productions receiving hard criticism from MCU fans and even from Disney CEO Bob Iger, who recently addressed the many conflicts the company’s been trough. And now another expert on the matter has shared his thoughts.

Arrowverse co-creator Marc Guggenheim spoke on The Aarthi and Sriram Show about how the excess of content the competition’s franchise has been delivering has actually turned into a problem:

“Each of these movies in Phases 1 through 3, they all stood on their own. Look I get it. I think honestly what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going through right now is the same discovery that Marvel print universe and the DC print universe also went through. Which is – I think of these universes like ships, and the longer a ship sails, the more barnacles get attached to its hull, and the more that weighs down the ship and the more it effects how fast the ship can move through the water.”

When and How Should the MCU Get a Reboot?
Marvel Studios

Guggenheim also revealed that he believes Marvel Studios is already planning to get a fresh start after one of its upcoming projects:

“My guess is what they are building up with Phase 4 is – the Secret Wars that they’ve announced is not the Secret Wars of the 1980s, it’s Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars which basically was sort of like a reset for the Marvel Universe.”

Published in 2015, the story that the Arrowverse co-creator is referring to involves the destruction of the main Marvel Universe and a few other alternate realities, so it could definitely work as a reboot for the whole franchise as Guggenheim states.

Avengers: Secret Wars was recently delayed due the current strikes at Hollywood, and will now debut on theaters on May 7, 2027. The next Marvel Studios movie coming to theaters will be The Marvels on November 10, 2023. It will be followed by Deadpool 3 on May 3, 2024; Captain America: Brave New World on July 26, 2024; Thunderbolts on December 20, 2024; Blade on February 14, 2025; Fantastic 4 on May 2, 2025; and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on May 1, 2026. But all of these dates may change if the writers and actors unions don’t reach an agreement with the AMPTP soon.

There are also many other projects in development that currently don’t have a confirmed release date, such as Spider-Man 4, Doctor Strange 3 or Shang-Chi 2.
