The Flash 2 Could Still Happen Depending on the Box Office

Sep 28, 2023

A sequel to The Flash could happen should the Andy Muschietti directed, Ezra Miller starring DC outing do well enough at the box office. According to a report by The Wrap, the studio is considering moving ahead with a follow-up using the script that has already been written by Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom scribe David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

“’The Flash’ is currently tracking to open around $70 million at the domestic box office. However, the film will have to leg out and come close to what 2021’s “The Batman” grossed worldwide ($770 million) in order to get a sequel off the ground,” the report claims, meaning that The Flash will need to match the takings of director Matt Reeves’ The Batman for The Flash 2 to get the greenlight.

But several questions hang over the prospect of The Flash 2. With James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for a renewed DCU now underway, and kicking off with the Superman reboot Superman: Legacy in 2025, would The Flash 2 come as part of the main franchise or under the DC: Elseworld’s banner? And, with The Flash opening up the prospect of the DC multiverse, would The Flash 2 continue to be so epic in scope, or would it follow the superhero on a much smaller adventure?

Lastly, would the sequel bring back Ezra Miller as the lead? The release of the first outing has already been controversial following the criminal acts and allegations carried out by the star, so would the studio really put them at the forefront of another major project?

From director Andy Muschietti’s perspective, should The Flash 2 go ahead, Miller should not be recast. “If [a sequel] happens, yes,” the filmmaker said about Miller returning. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”

The Flash Will Unleash the Madness of the DC Multiverse
Warner Bros.

Worlds collide in The Flash when the superhero uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian — albeit not the one he’s looking for.

As well as bringing back Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne aka Batman after more than 30 years, The Flash is expected to feature all manner of crowd-pleasing cameos as it unleashes the madness of the DC multiverse. While we will avoid spoilers here, The Flash director Andy Muschietti has himself revealed just how left field some of these cameos will be…

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson, The Flash stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen aka The Flash alongside Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, and Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as alternate versions of Batman.

The Flash is scheduled be released in theaters later this week on June 16.
