Rebel Moon’s Runtime Breaks Zack Snyder’s 12-Year Movie Record

Oct 23, 2023

Summary

Zack Snyder’s upcoming space opera, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, will have a runtime of two hours and 13 minutes, making it his shortest movie since Sucker Punch in 2011. Extended cuts for both Rebel Moon and its sequel, The Scargiver, are in the works and will add an extra 45 minutes to an hour of footage to each film. The director’s cuts will have an R rating, allowing for more violence, language, and mature content, with Snyder previously revealing that they will dig deeper into character.

Rebel Moon’s runtime has been revealed, and it’s Zack Snyder’s shortest movie since 2011. Beginning life as a failed Star Wars pitch, Snyder’s upcoming space opera, now officially titled Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, is set to hit Netflix later this year. The movie, the first in a two-part saga, stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a mysterious warrior who mobilizes the residents of a remote farming colony to fight back against a tyrannical galactic dictator.

Now, ahead of Rebel Moon’s release date, Netflix confirms that the movie’s runtime is two hours and 13 minutes. This makes it Snyder’s shortest movie since Sucker Punch in 2011, which was only one hour and 50 minutes long. While Rebel Moon may be a little shorter than the director’s recent offerings, there are already extended cuts in the works for both films.

How Long Will Rebel Moon’s Extended Cuts Be?

Earlier this year, Snyder confirmed that alternate, extended cuts would be baked into both movie’s release plans. It’s not yet exactly clear when these longer cuts will hit Netflix, but it shouldn’t be too long after each movie’s release. As for how much extra footage will be included in the Rebel Moon extended cuts, producer Deborah Snyder previously revealed that each one will be “45 minutes to an hour longer”.

It remains to be seen how long the standard version of Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will be, but the first movie’s extended edition runtime will seemingly be at least three hours. Content-wise, the extended cuts are expected to come with deeper explorations of the film’s many characters. Snyder previously explained that the extended cuts allow him to go down various “rabbit holes” that he wouldn’t otherwise have time for.

Another major deviation between the two versions of the film will be their age ratings. While the standard versions carry a PG-13, the Rebel Moon director’s cuts are confirmed to be rated R, allowing the filmmaker to feature more violence, language, and otherwise mature content.
