Riordan stressed the importance of making content that can satisfy everyone, especially when it comes to repeated viewings, as children often learn by watching shows over and over again.

“Family friendly TV is supposed to be watched together. The bar is going to be does it satisfy everyone especially when it is on repeat because kids learn by watching shows over and over again. Our hope is it will work for your family or found family.”

In this upcoming adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novel The Lightning Thief, Percy faces accusations from the Greek god Zeus, who believes he has stolen his lightning bolt. Disney+ is showing a strong commitment to the series, with each episode receiving a substantial budget ranging from $12-15 million. While there were previous attempts to bring Percy’s adventures to the screen with movies in 2010 and 2013, these adaptations fell short of fan expectations due to significant deviations from the source material.

Disney+ has plans for the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and author Rick Riordan is actively involved in shaping the upcoming installment. However, there’s still some uncertainty about when the project will kick into high gear. This season will draw its inspiration from the second novel in the series, The Sea of Monsters. Riordan previously shared insights into the adaptation process, expressing enthusiasm about introducing beloved characters like Tyson, the Cyclops, and expanding the roles of Clarisse LaRue and Luke Castellan.

“We’ve broken down the action of the second Percy Jackson book, The Sea of Monsters, into a series of episodes, and have begun outlining what the first episodes would look like,” Riordan notes. “I love imagining the introduction of Tyson, our favorite Cyclops, and it’s so helpful to picture our amazing actors in their on-going roles as I am visualizing the season. A bigger role for Clarisse LaRue, the incredible Dior Goodjohn? Yes, please. More Luke Castellan, aka Charlie Bushnell? Sign me up. The cast of the show includes leading roles portrayed by Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Sava Jeffries. Joining them IS a talented ensemble that includes Megan Mullally, Jason Mantzoukas, Virginia Kull, Timm Sharp, Gabe Ugliano, Glynn Turman, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jay Duplass, Timothy Omundson, and Adam Joseph Copeland. Additionally, the late Lance Reddick and Toby Stephens are set to take on the roles of Zeus and Poseidon.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will make its debut on Disney+ on December 20.
