‘We’re Getting Back to the God of Mischief’
Nov 19, 2023
Summary
Season one of Loki had a profound impact on the character, causing him to reset and figure out who he truly is after seeing his own death. Season two aims to rebalance Loki’s identity, bringing back the mischievous side of the God of Mischief while still maintaining his hero status. Loki’s actions have far-reaching consequences across the MCU, with the multiverse themes introduced in Phase 4 and 5 being influenced by his journey.
The MCU has seen myriad character evolutions, but none have been as profound and arresting as Loki. Thor’s once mischievous sibling, Loki, has transitioned through witnessing his fate and ultimately embracing heroism, marking a journey filled with highs and lows. Eric Martin, the creative force propelling Loki’s narrative on Disney+, recently opened up to The New York Times about the groundbreaking first season and its impact on the central character. Martin explained how the events pf the Disney+ series have so greatly affected the character:
“Season 1, and like Episode 1 especially, scrambled his brains. He sees his own death by the end of that. He realizes that even the infinity stones are pointless at this new level of things. And so he had to completely reset and figure out who he was.”
This transformative season had the intriguing effect of steering Loki, traditionally the schemer of the Marvel narrative, towards a more righteous path. However, as Martin astutely observed:
“Loki had kind of forgotten who he was, and Season 2 is like rebalancing that. So we still have this hero Loki, but we’re getting back to the meat and potatoes of who this guy is. We’re getting back to the God of Mischief. So we see him using all those talents of the God of Mischief but as a hero now.”
The teasers for the upcoming season hint at the exhilarating adventures awaiting Loki, featuring him “time slipping” through various historical events. Alongside familiar faces like Agent Mobius, played by the ever-charismatic Owen Wilson, Loki is set on a mission to prevent the annihilation of the Time Variance Agency (TVA).

Twists, Turns, & Temporal Tumult: Loki’s Continuation into the Depths of the Multiverse
Marvel Studios
The climax of the debut season offered fans a monumental revelation: the TVA, the omnipotent organization governing time, was a brainchild of the Kang the Conqueror variant, He Who Remains. In a twist of fate, Loki’s counterpart, Sylvie, played by Sophia Di Martino, eliminates him, inadvertently releasing Kang’s numerous multiverse versions. The second season’s premiere, Ouroboros, delves into the consequences of this decision. The disturbances caused by the duo jeopardize the TVA’s operations, with their actions pushing the very fabric of time to its limits.
An exciting addition to the Loki ensemble this season is Ke Huy Quan, who has made a commendable return to the silver screen. As O.B., the genius engineer, he’s attributed with crafting the intricate machinery and technology that powers the TVA, a revelation revealed by executive producer Kevin Wright.
While Loki’s escapades are centered away from MCU’s Earth, their ripples are felt across the universe. The groundbreaking embrace of multiverse themes in Phase 4 and Phase 5 has been attributed to the events stemming from Loki’s journey. Anticipation is building around the forthcoming Phase 6 movies, particularly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, where Kang promises to be a formidable foe. Additionally, Wright teased fans about the possibility of the TVA featuring prominently in upcoming multiverse-centric MCU tales, though this remains speculative.
As the boundaries of time and space continue to blur, viewers can tune in to Loki’s latest adventures. With new episodes releasing every Thursday at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST on Disney+, fans are in for a treat, witnessing the harmonious blend of mischief and heroism that is Loki.
