Jury Selected, Testimony to Start Monday – The Hollywood Reporter
Dec 1, 2023
Jonathan Majors’ trial on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges is expected to start in earnest Monday, after a six-person jury was selected Thursday.
The charges stem from an alleged domestic violence incident on March 25. Police responded to a 911 call and a 30-year-old woman reported being assaulted by Majors, with police noting that she had sustained minor injuries. She was treated at the hospital, according to the police, and Majors was released from police custody later that day.
He faces eight counts of misdemeanor assault, aggravated harassment and harassment. The potential sentence is up to a year in jail. His attorney, Priya Chaudhry has denied all wrongdoing on his behalf and entered a not guilty plea on his behalf Wednesday to all charges.
Majors has appeared in court, in person, this week, alongside his girlfriend, actress Meagan Good. He clasped his hands to his chest and slightly bowed to the jury as they entered Thursday and took notes as they responded out loud to the jury questionnaire.
Several jury members told Judge Michael Gaffey that they had seen videos related to the incident in the press before the trial. The pool was also asked by Chaudhry whether they were more likely to believe accusers who are women and whether Majors being a celebrity would impact their view of him, particularly, if, as someone who is a professional actor, he chooses not to testify. In addition to the six jurors, comprising three women and three men, two alternates were chosen from a pool of 39.
Before jury selection began, Gaffey ruled that the arrest of the woman involved in the incident, who has since been publicly identified as Grace Jabbari, could be brought up in court. Majors had filed a cross-complaint against Jabbari, alleging that she attacked him that night, and police issued an investigatory card, or I-Card for her arrest in late June. She surrendered herself for arrest in late October, despite prosecutors saying they had no plans to press charges, and the matter was closed and sealed.
Majors’ case is expected to take approximately two weeks.
