Godzilla Minus One Breaks Multiple Box Office Records
Dec 8, 2023
Summary
Godzilla Minus One, the newest Japanese interpretation of the kaiju tale, is setting box office records, including the biggest domestic opening for a foreign-language movie this year. This post-war, post-atomic bombing Japan storyline has captured the attention of audiences, leading to the biggest opening ever for a live-action Japanese movie in the US. With its release on December 1, Godzilla Minus One continues to dominate theaters and shows no signs of slowing down.
Godzilla Minus One has broken multiple box office records. From Japanese production company Toho, Godzilla Minus One is the latest Japanese interpretation of the classic kaiju tale wherein the monster is decimating cities in a post-war, post-atomic bombing Japan. Godzilla Minus One was released on December 1 and is currently in theaters.
After its release this past weekend, Collider reports that Godzilla Minus One has broken multiple box office records, including now having the biggest domestic opening for a foreign-language movie this year. Grossing $11 million at the U.S. box office, Godzilla Minus One has the second-highest debut for any live-action, foreign-language film (beaten only by 2002’s Hero). Furthermore, this total makes Godzilla Minus One the largest-ever domestic debut for a Japanese live-action film.
Godzilla Minus One’s Box Office Success Is Great For The Franchise
Godzilla Minus One’s box office total is astounding for multiple reasons, but among them is the film’s relatively low budget. With an estimated budget of $15 million, Godzilla Minus One has nearly made back its budget in the domestic totals alone. On a global scale, the film has already more than doubled its budget in earnings, raking in roughly $35 million worldwide. Godzilla Minus One came in No. 3 at the domestic box office, behind only Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
To make matters better for the action movie, Godzilla Minus One’s reviews are singing its praises. The film holds a Certified Fresh 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated Godzilla films of all time. Some critics are calling Godzilla Minus One the best film in the franchise, which is high praise considering the quantity of Godzilla films that there are at this point.
Taken in tandem, Godzilla Minus One’s combined success with the box office and critics is a great sign for the franchise. While the Hollywood Monsterverse continues its next development in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the Japanese-based Godzilla franchise also has the chance to experience its own renaissance. The franchise’s rise was already looking somewhat hopeful with the positive reviews of 2016’s Shin Godzilla, but with the reports of Godzilla Minus One, it looks like the resurgence of the kaiju monster is only just beginning.
