Family Plan 2 Chances Addressed By Director
Dec 17, 2023
Summary
Director Simon Cellan Jones is interested in making a sequel to The Family Plan, and wants to work with the cast again. The success of the movie and its viewership numbers will determine if a sequel will be greenlit. The potential sequel may face challenges such as retaining the main cast and accommodating the aging of the younger actors.
Following its streaming premiere, director Simon Cellan Jones addresses the chances of The Family Plan 2. The 2023 movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a retired assassin who has built a family of his own. Though he initially planned to never return to his old work again, an ensuing crisis forces him to take his family on a road trip, while he desperately tries to keep them alive. Alongside Wahlberg, the ensemble cast for the Apple TV+ comedy includes Michelle Monaghan, Ciarán Hinds, Zoe Colletti and Maggie Q.
The overall success of Mark Wahlberg’s family-friendly assassin movie has not yet been completely confirmed, but director Simon Cellan Jones is already considering the possibility of a sequel. In an interview with Forbes, Jones explained that he is interested in a sequel and wants another chance to work with the cast again. Check out his quote below:
No, not yet. You never know. It’s something that might be worth doing. We haven’t had a specific conversation. But I’m sure the writer’s got more stuff in him and this family is so good together, that it would be great to work with them again.
The Family Plan’s Odds For A Sequel
There has not yet been word about the viewership numbers for The Family Plan, which is understandable, given that it has been only one day since the release at the time of writing. Numbers will likely need to be high to retain Wahlberg, a relatively high-profile actor. Wahlberg has taken part in sequels before, including Ted 2 and Daddy’s Home 2, which could be a positive sign, but it could still prove difficult to keep this cast together. His costar, Michelle Monaghan, is also critically renowned, having earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in True Detective.
An additional problem is that, if the movie is ever greenlit, it will be some time before it can enter production. The younger actors who play Wahlberg’s children, Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby, could very well age out of their roles, depending on how long pre-production takes. Colletti has also become a fairly high-profile actor, having taken major roles in Skin, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Fear the Walking Dead. She could very quickly become too busy to be involved with the sequel, in which case, she would need to be recast.
The other major hurdle for The Family Plan 2’s chances is that few Apple TV+ movies have ever received sequels. Tom Hanks’ Greyhound reportedly has a sequel in development, but most of their movies have remained singular releases, despite their popularity. Still, given that the platform has only existed since late 2019, there has not been much time for sequels to conclude development and release. Many of its shows have received second seasons, which could be a positive sign for Wahlberg’s latest movie.
