Netflix Developing Two Peaky Blinders Spinoff Shows
Dec 20, 2023
Summary
Netflix plans to create two spinoffs of the crime drama series Peaky Blinders, set in Boston and focused on the character Polly Gray. The Boston spinoff will likely explore the Peaky Blinders’ dealings with Boston gangsters in the mid-20th century. The Polly series will likely be a prequel, as the character was killed off-screen in season five due to the actress’s passing.
Netflix is planning to create their own Peaky Blinders franchise, with the streaming service now reportedly planning at least two spinoffs based on the crime drama series created by Steven Knight. According to a new report by Bloomberg, Netflix is now working on a sequel to the original show set in Boston, as well as a series centered on the magnetic matriarch, Elizabeth Pollyanna “Polly” Gray.
“One of those would be set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, a couple decades after the original Peaky Blinders, while another would focus on Polly, the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan.”
While further details remain unknown, the Peaky Blinders did have dealings with Boston gangsters in the main run, most notably the intimidating crime boss Jack Nelson in season six. Played by Animal Kingdom star James Frecheville, it is possible that this sequel series will build upon Nelson as his criminal empire in the mid-20th century.
As for the Polly series, this is likely to be a prequel, with the character being murdered off-screen in season five. Sadly, Polly’s fate came as a result of the late, great actress Helen McCrory tragically passing away in April 2021, aged just 52 after a battle with breast cancer.
Whatever shape these spinoffs take, Netflix is clearly looking to build as many franchises as possible, with their hit show Wednesday also looking to expand beyond its main series. So, while the main Peaky Blinders series may have ended, there is still much more to come.

What Does This Mean for the Peaky Blinders Movie?
Debuting back in 2013, Peaky Blinders follows Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the dangerous leader of the Peaky Blinders, a criminal gang based in Birmingham in 1919. Covering all manner of crime, betrayal, violence, and political schemes, the Peaky Blinders series came to an end last year, ending with Tommy riding off, possibly into a new life, with the world believing him dead.
But, while the main show has come to its dramatic conclusion, creator Steven Knight is eager to continue the tale of the Peaky Blinders in a movie. The Peaky Blinders movie has been in the works for some time, with Knight revealing back in 2020 that a feature film would take the place of a seventh season. While there is no production date set for the project, Knight does expect audiences to be sitting down to watch the Peaky Blinders movie some time in 2024.
Knight has teased the epic scope of the movie, even comparing it to the iconic blockbuster franchise that is James Bond.
“The biggest difference between a film and TV series is the budget. When you do stuff for TV, you often have to ask people to imagine it. But with a film, you can really do it. You can blow stuff up. Will Tommy be giving James Bond a run for his money? Maybe. There are parallels. We always thought of Peaky as very cinematic, so we are finally finding a screen big enough for what we want to do.”
Peaky Blinders is now streaming on Netflix.
