Joker 2 Cinematographer Says the Movie Is a ‘Big Swing’

Jan 4, 2024

Summary

The sequel to Joker is close to finishing post-production and is expected to be a big surprise for viewers, with a different approach and new elements. Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn and the movie’s musical format have generated a lot of anticipation among fans. Joker: Folie à Deux has a chance to be the biggest superhero release of 2024, as many other anticipated titles have been delayed due to strikes and production issues.

Todd Phillips gave Joker fans a Christmas treat by sharing two new images from the sequel to the 2019 hit. Joker: Folie á Deux could be one of the big surprises of 2024,and even though the movie is not set to be released until next October, the director continues to tease the musical follow-up. Check out the latest images from the production, which feature both Joaquin Pheonix and Lady Gaga in their roles as Joker and Harley Quinn respectively.

While many of the most anticipated blockbusters of next year have delayed their releases due to the strikes in Hollywood, the Joker sequel is close to finishing its post-production, as revealed by its cinematographer. The 2019 film tells a brand-new origin story of Gotham City’s most famous villain, the Caped Crusader’s main enemy, and one of the most popular characters in the world of comic books and pop culture. However, far from doing it with the already known formula of superhero movies, it does so with a character study, exposing social, political and economic conflicts with atrocious violence.

The sequel, announced shortly after the first part, did not initially generate much excitement among fans for fear that it would ruin the almost perfect story of Arthur Fleck. However, Phillips, Phoenix and the rest of the team worked to present a very different comic book movie, one that manages to surprise as much as the previous movie but with new elements. One of those surprises will be Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, and also the way the story will be told, in the form of a musical. Something that has generated a lot of expectation.

Speaking with Definition Magazine, cinematographer Lawrence Sher talked about the current status of the film, teasing the unexpected project:

“Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks. We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”

Could Joker: Folie à Deux Save the Superhero Genre in 2024?

The situation the film industry finds itself in for the next year did not seem very promising just a few months ago. While big titles like Dune: Part Two moved their debut from 2023 to 2024, many productions that were set to premiere next year realized that they would not meet their release dates due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

But 2024 is even more complicated for the superhero genre, and in particular for DC and Warner Bros., because with the reboot of the DC franchise, the first titles planned by James Gunn will only start being released from 2025, so Joker 2 is the company’s most likely candidate to be a huge comic book hit for the year.

As for the competition, Marvel Studios now has only the release of Deadpool 3, with movies such as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts having been pushed back to 2025 thanks to a variety of behind the scenes issues being faced by the Disney-owned franchise. Of course, Sony Pictures will also be releasing Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and Venom 3, but based on past experience, the success of these movies is currently hard to predict.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released on October 4, 2024.
