“No Plans” For Anyone Else But Margot Robbie To Play Harley Quinn & ‘Peacemaker’ S2 Is Still On The Way
Jan 5, 2024
Yesterday, Margot Robbie made headlines when she was interviewed by Variety and was asked whether she would reprise her iconic role as DC anti-hero Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC Studios plan, given DC is mostly rebooting and reimagining their film universe. And frankly, her answer was pretty evasive. “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her,” she said, not directly answering the question, suggesting others could take on the role like Lady Gaga, who is set to play Harley Quinn in the DC Elseworlds* film by Todd Phillips, “Joker: Folie à Deux” starring Joaquin Phoenix (*meaning, it’s not connected to the main timeline of the DCU and what DC Studios is cooking).

This led many, including us, to believe Robbie would not be playing Quinn moving forward. After all, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has been reasonably transparent and already stated that only three characters from the past DC Extended Universe are moving forward into his plan: Peacemaker (John Cena) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Xolo Maridueña from “Blue Beetle.”
But, as seems to be a constant these days, Gunn appears to be walking that back slightly, making room for Robbie’s potential return.
Asked about it on Threads, Instagram’s Twitter alternative social media channel where Gunn is very active, the director and studio chief said, I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time,” he wrote. “But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s.)”
Gunn obviously already directed Robbie as Quinn in 2021’s “The Suicide Squad,” and clearly, he has affection for that film since Peacemaker and Amanda Waller both come from it.
Speaking of “Peacemaker,” Gunn already wrote and directed one season of the show, and fans were asking him, what’s up with season two? Will it ever happen? The answer is yes.
Gunn replied to an inquiry about the show; it’s “Over halfway written. ?” he said. So, as always, since nothing is certain, file Robbie under a maybe, and or Gunn is at least leaving the door open for her a little bit and hasn’t closed it shut as he has on other actors and characters from the DCEU like The Flash, Wonder Woman, and seemingly, Aquaman too.
Gunn’s DC Studios doesn’t begin in earnest until summer 2025 with “Superman: Legacy,” a chapter one that he calls “Gods and Monsters.” Still, it is supposed to be a primarily hard reboot that jettisons all old and previous versions of DC, like Henry Cavill as Superman. From there, Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran announced five new DC films (including ‘Legacy’) and five new TV shows (not including “Peacemaker” season 2). Still, currently, there is no timetable for any of those ten projects and no indication of when they might arrive.
If you want a refresher on those ten projects, watch Gunn’s “Gods and Monsters” DC Studios plan below.
