Netflix’s New Genre-Bending Series From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Creators Arrives March 21
Jan 9, 2024
You’ll remember when “Game Of Thrones” was ending, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were planning their exit strategy and what’s next. At first, it was Lucasfilm that announced a new deal to launch a new Jedi trilogy for “Star Wars.” Then they signed an even bigger deal with Netflix, and “Star Wars” got canceled (or they dropped it anyhow). And it’s been several years now, but the fruits of their Netflix labors are finally starting to take shape with “3 Body Problem.”

Though it’s not their first Netflix series (that was 2021’s low-key academia dramedy “The Chair”), it’s arguably their most prominent, a series they created along with Alexander Woo featuring director Derek Tsang (“Better Days”). A genre-bending series blending sci-fi, drama, and mystery, the gist of it is that someone, or something, is targeting the Earth’s scientists, basically killing off the best and brightest for reasons that are unclear but clearly alarming to many on the planet that can recognize a worrisome global threat plot when they see one.
Adapted from the novel “The Three-Body Problem,” the creators are doing it differently.
“What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen,” Alexander Woo, Co-Creator and executive producer, told Tudum recently. “What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.” –
“3 Body Problems” international cast stars Benedict Wong, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, “Game Of Thrones” alumnus John Bradley, Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Rosalind Chao, Sir Jonathan Pryce, Ben Schnetzer, Liam Cunningham (also from “Game Of Thrones”) Marlo Kelly, Sea Shimooka, Saamer Usmani, Eve Ridley, and many more.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The story begins in 1960s China when a young woman makes a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists must join forces with an unflinching detective to stop humanity’s greatest threat. 3 Body Problem is an epic story that redefines sci-fi drama with its layered mysteries and story of human connection.
“3 Body Problem” debuts globally on March 21 on Netflix. Watch the first official trailer below.
