Inside Reacher Season Two’s Intense Helicopter Scene

Summary
Production designer Naz Goshtasbpour emphasizes the importance of practical effects in achieving the best results for intense action sequences in Reacher. Goshtasbpour faced the challenge of making the interior of a real model helicopter larger to accommodate actors and stunts without relying heavily on post-production VFX. Reacher season 2 has been a huge success, and the show has been renewed for a third season with a promise of new adventures for the titular character.
Reacher season two Production Designer Naz Goshtasbpour has revealed details of just how they pulled off that intense helicopter sequence. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Goshtasbpour declared her passion for using practical effects wherever possible, highlighting the importance of balancing both practical and VFX to get the best results.
“I like the balance of VFX versus practical effects, but I always love doing things practically because it just looks way better all the time or most of the time. I know sometimes we are up against time restraints and troubleshooting, so we always have to weigh those pros and cons, but I’m a firm pusher for practical effects.”
Admitting that every set has its own challenges, she went on to detail how a particular helicopter sequence in season two of Reacher was unique in its realization.
“That was a big, very fun, and challenging build because it was based on a real model of a helicopter, Super Puma. I picked the helicopter, and we went in and looked at the inside, but the inside is smaller than we needed it to be. So, trying to figure out the balance of making the inside of a helicopter match the outside without it being massive was one of the first things that we had to figure out.”
In the name of movie magic (or, in this case, TV magic), Goshtasbpour had to ensure the interior of the helicopter was big enough to fit the actors and allow them to partake in the kind of action that Reacher fans have come to know and love.
“We had to make sure it had just enough space for the actors to do their stunts. Because I want to be able to provide a set where we don’t need to augment as much in post-production VFX, it was important for me to build the structure of the helicopter within the body of it. So, when it’s on the gimbal, you could shoot out the windows without having any obstructions that then you had to paint out later. The engineering of that also had its own challenge.”

Reacher Has Been Renewed for Season 3
Reacher Creator Nick Santora Cast Alan Ritchson , Maria Sten , Malcolm Goodwin , Willa Fitzgerald Rating TV-MA
After introducing Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, a behemoth former U.S. Army Military Police Major now living off the grid and solving crimes as he goes, the second season is based on the 11th book in author Lee Child’s renowned series, Bad Luck and Trouble. Thus, season two picks up with the titular character who, after members of his old military unit start turning up dead, has just one thing on his mind: revenge.
Both seasons have been a big hit for Prime Video, with the second season being declared the #1 show on the streaming platform, surpassing “the entire Season 1 audience by 50% in the first three days on the streamer.”
So, it should come as little surprise to learn that Reacher has been renewed for a third outing, with star Alan Ritchson teasing “a new world” when discussing season three back in December.
“I can’t say too much about Season 3, but I will say there’s a lot of classic Reacher stories which are just adventures that he gets sucked into in a big way. And we get to enjoy Reacher in a new world. It may not have anything to do with family, with his past, he’s just living that adventure out and that’s kind of the direction that we’ve gone and it seems to really be working.”
Both seasons of Reacher are available to stream on Prime Video. Check out the trailer for season two below:
