The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” should arrive on Prime Video later this year, but the streamer is already making inroads into a third go-around. Series executive producers and showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have just signed a new overall deal with Amazon Studios. And, while a writer’s room has not officially begun, it appears Payne and McKay are already working on a story outline for season three.

The duo’s new deal will officially launch their own company, 10:40 PM Productions. The deal gives Amazon an exclusive first look over the next three years.
In a statement, Amazon MGM Studios TV head Vernon Sanders noted, “We began this remarkable journey with JD and Patrick more than five and a half years ago and have never looked back. We continue to be amazed by the scope and scale of their vision and the enormous global success achieved by ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ in its record-breaking first season. We can’t wait for Prime Video customers to experience the epic adventure and high-stakes drama that JD and Patrick are continuing to build throughout season two and beyond. Naturally, the studio is thrilled to extend our overall deal with these brilliant creative minds as they continue to deliver on their passion for great storytelling.”
“The Rings of Power” debuted on September 1 worldwide. According to the streamer, it was the most-watched Amazon Original in every region and debuted at #1 on Nielsen’s streaming chart.
The first season was shot in New Zealand during the pandemic. Season two moved the production to the United Kingdom. The third season is also expected to be filmed in the U.K. at a new production facility at Shepperton Studios.
