Western Movies on Tubi in March 2024
Mar 1, 2024
For some audiences, nothing beats a good Western featuring beautiful landscapes, epic cowboy shootouts, and profound narratives. Western films have been around for over a century, dating back to the early 1900s, with one of the first Western features, The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903. Over the years, hundreds of these films have been made, some of which have become iconic while others have been commercial failures.
Even in modern cinema, Western films continue to provide a thrilling experience. While there are a few Westerns on major streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video, Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service, offers them in abundance. This is partly due to the streamer’s consistent addition of new Westerns every month. With that in mind, here is every Western film coming to Tubi in March 2024.
Hell on the Border
Streaming Mar. 1
Hell on the Border is a 2019 Western film written and directed by Wes Miller. It is based on the true story of Bass Reeves, the first African-American deputy U.S. Marshal credited with apprehending over 3000 felons throughout his illustrious career. The story takes place in 1875 Arkansas and chronicles the life of Bass Reeves, who, after shooing five men to save a judge, travels to the Indian Territory in search of a dangerous outlaw.
The film will provide a clear perspective on his exploits, how he became who he is, and what he had to endure. Hell on the Border is not your typical Western film because it is essentially a flawed biography. While it isn’t entirely accurate in terms of historical representation, it does a fantastic job of describing Bass Reeves. This 2019 Western will be available on Tubi on Mar. 1.
Open Range
Streaming Mar. 1
Open Range is a riveting action Western film based on Lauran Paine’s novel The Open Range. Following its release in 2003, the film was a box-office success, bringing in nearly $70 million worldwide against a $22 million budget, and was widely praised by fans and critics alike. Directed by Kevin Costner, Open Range follows the lives of four cowboys: Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall), Mose Harrison (Abraham Benrubi), and Button (Diego Luna), who live peacefully far from civilization by raising a herd of cattle.
However, when Boss and Charley come across the kingpin rancher Denton Baxter (Sir Michael Gambon) and the corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo) in the neighboring town, their idyllic life is disrupted by an incident that sends them on a path of vengeance. Charley, who left his past as a lethal gunslinger, is now forced to embrace it so as not to repeat the tragedies he has experienced. Open Range will be available for streaming on Tubi beginning Mar. 1, 2024.
The Last Manhunt
Streaming Mar. 18
The Last Manhunt is a Western that is both thrilling and emotional, with a love story somewhat similar to Romeo and Juliet told from an Old West perspective. The Last Manhunt is a slow-burn, beautifully made chase film that digs into Native American culture while remaining faithful to the story it tries to tell. So, if you’ve read some negative reviews about the film’s lack of action, keep in mind that it is based on true events.
The plot of The Last Manhunt revolves around two star-crossed lovers, Willie Boy and Carlotta. Willie Boy loves Carlotta, but her father forbids him from seeing her, which leads to Willie Boy making a grave mistake. During an unexpected confrontation, Willie Boy accidentally kills Carlotta’s father, forcing the young couple to flee from the only place they consider home.
As word spreads about the murder, the native lawmen organize a hunt to track down Willie Boy, resulting in a devastating showdown that is remembered as a tragedy of the Old West. In an interview with Variety, the filmmakers explained what the narrative represents. They stated,
“The truth of Willie Boy’s story lies in the overlooked voices of the desert people who have inhabited it for generations: the Chemehuevi. To them, Willie Boy wasn’t a savage murderer, he was simply a man who fell in love with a woman that wasn’t meant for him.”
The story of The Last Manhunt was co-written by Jason Momoa, who also stars in the film, and directed by Christian Camargo, who previously helmed Days and Nights. The film’s cast includes Martin Sensmeier, Mainei Kinimaka, Zahn McClaron, Wade Williams, Justin Campbell, and Lily Gladstone, currently in the running for the Best Actress award at the 2024 Oscars. The Last Manhunt is streaming on Tubi on Mar. 18.
