“I Don’t Have My Friends Anymore”

Anthony Mackie makes his official film debut as Captain America in next February’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” But if the actor could have things his way, he’d instead do another season of “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier” to hang out with Sebastian Stan and Daniel Brühl.

In an interview with Radio Times to promote the premiere of “Twisted Metal” on Paramount Plus UK, Mackie talked about the love he has for the Disney+ series, and how he wishes Marvel execs had plans for another season. “I really enjoyed doing that show. I was actually excited to do a second season, just so me and Sebastian can get paid to hang out,” Mackie told the outlet. “Because it’s like me, him and Daniel Brühl. It’s kind of like the perfect storm of happiness.”
A Season 2 for “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier” was never officially announced. But after Kevin Feige‘s revealed the titles for the MCU‘s Phases 5 and 6 at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, any hopes for another batch of episodes ended. Unfortunately for Mackie, neither Stan nor Brühl will star or even cameo in “Brave New World,” but Stan’s Bucky Barnes will show up in “Thunderbolts,” another upcoming MCU feature. As for Brühl, he’s not on the cast lists for either film, so his tenure in the MCU may be over.
When asked by RT when he knew he’d no longer have Stan and Brühl as co-stars, Mackie replied, “when they decided to go back to the movies. It is what it is, but I don’t have my friends anymore, so it kind of dampens it a little bit.” But at least Mackie got to share the show’s legendary bit of Brühl’s Helmut Zemo dancing in a nightclub. “Anything I can do to hang out with Daniel, a dancing Daniel Brühl, makes me very happy,” Mackie joked.
But maybe a Zemo fly-by cameo is still possible for either “Brave New World” or “Thunderbolts.” The former hits theaters on February 14, 2025, while the latter arrives on May 2, 2024.
