Aldi’s Next Big Thing? Flake Bake Jamaican Beef Patty Review

Apr 11, 2024

Now you may be thinking what on earth is a food review doing on a movie website? I’m also asking myself that same question but after a recent helpful content update destroyed the world of blogging as we know it I’m throwing caution to the wind and writing about just about anything I see fit.
So, thanks for stopping by!
Aldi’s Next Big Thing is a Television show that is similar to Dragon’s Den where chefs create the next masterpiece that will be stocked on Aldi shelves.
The winner of this particular show was dad and son duo Paul and Michael who presented their Jamaican take on a traditional British Cornish pasty.
Beef, Onion and Scotch Bonnet chilli combined and wowed the judges who described it as ‘Delicious’.
As a result, Flake Bake produced 25,000 patties for Aldi Shelves and we got our hands on one to bring you this Flake Bake Jamaican Beef Patty review.
Now I imagine with Flake Bake taking over the distribution (at scale) there were a few corners cut along the way in terms of keeping that authentic flavour because what I tasted was certainly not Aldi’s Next Big Thing and here’s why.

Ingredients: Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Water, Palm Oil, Beef (12%), Onion, Cornflour, Sugar, Spring Onions, Salt, Yeast Extract, Rapeseed Oil, Scotch Bonnet Chilli Purée, Garlic Puree, Beef Fat, Thyme, Tomato Paste, Beef Stock (Beef Extract, Salt), Malted ?????? Extract, Sunflower Oil, Colour: Carotenes.
Presented in wonderful eye-catching packaging the pastry is popped into the oven (not the microwave) for 18 minutes and we decided to cut it in half so we could sample half hot, and a half cold patty to distinguish the differences.
Were they any?
No
Whilst the pastry was soft the filling was lacklustre in every department. Firstly, there was very little of it and secondly, once it enters your mouth the pastry dominates the entire patty leaving a flavourless lump of food in your mouth.
No hit of chilli (despite a medium heat level rating on the packaging) no discernable taste of beef, and not even an onion was to be found as it all blended together in bland boring harmony.
This is certainly not on Paul and Michael who I’m sure delivered an incredible patty to wow the judges but now it’s been upscaled and put onto the shelves not only have corners been cut but the entire reason why it won. FLAVOUR!

For 99p it’s an absolute steal but sadly Flake Bake has also stolen the flavour from this rather disappointing addition to Aldi shelves.
A real shame as there are some incredible Jamaican Patty’s out there for people to indulge in and enjoy but sadly, this one just isn’t it.
Whatever happens, Paul and Michael are set to make a nice chunk of change from this deal and if the original was as good as everyone said then they deserve it but I can’t imagine that even they would be proud of tasting this rather poor attempt at mass producing a genuinely nice and unique dish.
If this was a Tinder date, I’d swipe left.
Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme I’d choose anything else over this, any time.
