Netflix’s Best 10-Part Gothic Thriller Officially Getting New Remake
Jul 28, 2026
Netflix has been in the horror game virtually ever since the DVD rental service went all-in on streaming. Titles like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black might have been the shows they used to highlight the platform’s prestige, but another one of its earlier titles was Hemlock Grove, which was produced by Eli Roth. It might not have become a complete sensation, though its early success helped open the door to one of the most popular TV shows of the past decade: Stranger Things. Part of the appeal of that show was how it blended together horror with sci-fi and action-adventure elements, though the streamer still kept their overtly horrifying stories coming. Debuting in 2018, The Haunting of Hill House quickly captured the attention of audiences on the platform. While it was a series that was undeniably terrifying, part of what gave it such widespread acclaim was that it was more of a gripping drama that was punctuated by unsettling elements, as opposed to merely trying to freak out viewers from start to finish. Mike Flanagan’s cinematic eye helped make the show such a hit, yet with the series being based on Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name. A new adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House is on the way, with it being officially announced earlier this year that it would be taking the form of a stage play. This new adaptation has recently taken a major step forward, as the cast of the adaptation has been revealed.
The cast of the new adaptation is as follows:
Jasper Britton as Dr Montague
Jemma Churchill as Mrs Montague
Sian Howard as Mrs Dudley
Sophie Lenglinger as Theo
Robin Morrissey as Luke
Clancy Ryan as Eleanor
After the release of The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan would develop The Haunting of Bly Manor, which similarly blended together intense drama with otherworldly elements. While many cast members returned in new roles, it was an entirely standalone narrative, this time inspired by the works of Henry James. After the release of that series in 2020, there has been no word on a third season. Netflix’s take on Jackson’s novel might be the most famous in recent memory, but it’s far from the first. Back in 1963, the movie The Haunting was an adaptation that remained relatively faithful to the source material, exploring a group of paranormal researchers hoping to find concrete evidence of a haunting. Another movie, 1999’s The Haunting, had a somewhat similar premise, though leaned more into visual effects and CGI to convey its spirits rather than building tension. Flanagan’s Hill House also diverged from the source material, but in a way that was more impressive to audiences and critics.
This new stage adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House is expected to premiere this fall.
