Chemistry between leading actors is vital to any show’s success, and Dead Boy Detectives’ stars, George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, recently revealed they had it from the moment they met. Netflix’s new series, set in The Sandman universe, follows two teenage ghosts and a living psychic who solve undead mysteries, allowing the deceased to move on to the afterlife. Its lead characters, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, have been friends and partners for decades, and it was vital that Netflix’s adaptation presented this through their performances.
In a preview screening and Q+A panel which MovieWeb attended, featuring the cast and creators of Dead Boy Detectives, Jayden Revri revealed the instantaneous bond he formed with his leading co-star.
“We met at Heathrow Airport before we flew out to Vancouver.
And I remember it was almost like ‘love at first sight,’ is kind of the way we describe it
. It was straight away, wasn’t it? We just kind of knew. You know when you meet somebody and you just know, this is going to be a very easy six months – or however long it was.
“I remember we would practice all of our scenes before. And when we all read the pilot, I remember people would say to us, ‘Did you guys know each other before this?’ Because people would assume we had already been friends beforehand.”

Who Are the Dead Boy Detectives?
Based on the graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, Dead Boy Detectives is a spin-off series from Gaiman’s seminal The Sandman comics. The characters first appeared in The Sandman #25 in 1992, and were only intended to appear briefly during the ‘Season of Mists’ storyline. However, Gaiman loved writing the characters so much, he developed a spin-off comic (with Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham) for Vertigo Comics in 2013.
The series is one of many spin-offs from the main Sandman story line. Gaiman also produced The Dreaming, telling stories within Morpheus’ realm, Sandman Mystery Theatre, retelling the stories of the original Sandman hero (who existed before Gaiman reinvented the character in 1988), and the immensely popular Lucifer comics, which were later adapted into the hit series starring Tom Ellis.
