A new docuseries titled
Who Killed WCW?
produced by Dwayne Johnson explores the rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling.
Premiering on June 4, 2024, the series will feature interviews that shed light on the personal struggles of those involved in the Monday Night Wars.
Dwayne Johnson believes it’s the perfect time to tell wrestling stories, inspired by the captivating saga of WCW’s epic rise and fall.
The late 90s were a good time to be a wrestling fan, as the war between WWE and WCW was on fire, and produced some of the most outrageous content ever seen in the sport of professional wrestling. For a time, it seemed that Ted Turner’s company would be the one to take down the juggernaut owned by Vince McMahon, but the WWE eventually came out on top, and McMahon bought World Championship Wrestling after a series of failures caused the downfall of the company. It’s those failures, and just who was responsible that are at the center of a new docuseries produced by Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions titled Who Killed WCW?
As per Deadline, the four-part series will premiere on June 4, 2024, on Vice TV, and explore the complexities of the Monday Night Wars. It will feature in-depth interviews with all those involved, and will help shed a light on the personal struggles of the people who lived through those tumultuous times. This will be the second wrestling docuseries produced by Johnson’s company for Vice, as he was previously involved in the series Tales from the Territories.

In a statement released by Dany Garcia, she says the wrestling industry is often misunderstood. She believes that by exploring the saga of WCW, it will not only highlight the storytelling talents of Seven Bucks Productions, but allow them “to build a bridge” between the industry’s passionate fans, and those who might just be curious to learn what it’s all about.
“Diving into the saga of WCW is not just another project for us; it is an opportunity to highlight our talents as documentary storytellers in a world where we have historical credibility and knowledge: professional wrestling. This project allows us to build a bridge between the passionate global wrestling audience and those curious about an often-misunderstood industry, strengthened by our partnership with a dedicated storyteller in Vice TV.”
Dwayne Johnson Says The Time Is Right to Tell “Top-Quality Wrestling Stories”
Since his days as a full-time wrestler came to an end, Dwayne Johnson has gone on to become one of the biggest stars on the planet as both an actor and producer. He recently returned to the ring at Wrestlemania 40 as part of a storyline involving his cousin, Roman Reigns, and the infamous Bloodline, and with WWE and professional wrestling being as popular as its ever been, Johnson (who never worked for World Championship Wrestling) believes this is the perfect moment to tell the story of WCW.
“The iconic rise and fall of WCW is one of professional wrestling’s most captivating stories – full of big dreams, massive successes, painful failures, and the harsh realities of the pro wrestling business. With wrestling viewership and fan engagement at an ultimate high, there has never been a more perfect time to tell top-quality wrestling stories, and there’s no better one to start with than a one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes look at this epic saga, known as The Rise and Fall of WCW and personally, the rise of WCW, not the fall, inspired me greatly early in my career where I would eventually become, the Final Boss.”

As for Vice TV, who have recently undergone a series of structural changes, their interim president, Peter Gaffney, says the company is “lucky” to join forces with Seven Bucks Productions.
“Vice TV has always been at the forefront of telling stories from which others shy away. We’re lucky to join forces again with Dwayne, Dany, and the Seven Bucks team. We have unparalleled access to one of the great stories of modern professional wrestling, and we can’t wait for our audience to see it come to life.”
